Anyone else think we've seen Quincy's peak already? Better hope this coach can clean up his awful form or his inconsistent results will continue. He'll go the way of Matthew Boling who could also never clean up his form. At least Quincy knows his event while Boling persisted with the 100 for far too long.
This.
Rooting for the kid, but it's likely we've seen his peak.
I disagree. While he might not improve a lot, he still has growing to do. There's a big difference in strength between a 16 year old and a 20 year old, and even more as a 25 year old. Even if he improves 1 second he's almost at the world record (if I have his PRs correct). There's still room to build strength.
that whole video was kinda odd. i couldn't imagine my dad getting up on stage and reading all of my accolades to an audience. Turning it into this huge theatrical thing. I think I'm just from a different era or something.
Someone remind me if I have a kid who is a superstarathlete to not live stream it. That was almost as cringe as Lebron's announcement but not as bad as he didn't devastate a hometown on live tv.
Jesus, the egotism of doing something like that live.
Dude, the median SAT at Maryland is 1450. It’s a great school, academically.
It was Joe Namath's dream school. But he missed the SAT cutoff and in those days there was nothing the football coach could do. Ended up going to Alabama and the rest is history.

UMD doesn't even have a cross country team. They are an unserious program. It's frustrating because UMD is in the middle of a huge talent pool and they squander it by underfunded their running programs. A lot of them end up at UMBC. There's not even a proper indoor track anywhere in MD.
preach! Maryland is just a poorly run state. The once great UMD athletic program is a shell of it self outside of lacrosse. The state went all in on federal jobs for its economy and is now suffering. IF the program was funded just 50% better and had good coaches; it could really be something.
This is how the game is now played. It's all branding and number of followers. I read that Dan Roberts lost his shoe co sponsore due to his insufficient Social Media presence
Seems like a strange choice. Any chance his high school coach comes as a package deal or something?
It would seem strange to someone like yourself who doesn't know much about the sport. The Maryland coach is Andrew Valmon, you may want to type his name into your search bar and hit return.
There are world record holders who can't coach a lick and individuals who never competed in a single race who are geniuses.

I too have been pumping the brakes on Wilson for the last year.
One he started to struggle to beat last year's times this year, it hit me (admittedley, he's the 38th fastest guy in histoy so it should be hard to PR). My fear for Quincy is he's not very big. Look at the fastest 10 men in history. They are all six feet or taller except for this year's world champ Collen Kebinatshipi, who became the shortest man in history to break 44 in the 400 this year at worlds.
Are there outliers? Yes. I mean you don't have to be over 6' to be a great NFL quarterback but nearly all of them are. And yes, it was once thought Usain Bolt was too tall to be a great sprinter.
Yes, you can say he's 'got room to grow'. He's young, etc. But did you see his dad? He's already taller than him. Both Quincy and SML are listed at 5'9. I'd be surprised if he gets any taller.
Ever since my coaching days, I have a theory that shorter men often hit their peak earlier in track.
Things are so different now with NIL that school selection for someone as accomplished as Wilson isn't that big of a deal. His entire future is not determined by his school choice, he has a lot of choices and options, even if Maryland is only a 1- year thing.

No indoor track facility either. Seems he manages fine without one for now, but wouldn't you want improved training facilities/conditions when you move up to college?
Their track results from last year are seriously unimpressive. Only two guys managed to run 47.x
A lot of the people defending Maryland's coach because of his track results must also be very impressed by Bernard Lagat's work coaching Arizona because he used to be fast. I judge a coach by his coaching results and Maryland's (for the most part) suck. Now there may be reasons to explain some of those results (lack of institutional support), but saying the coach used to be fast is a pretty lame defense.
I will say that Maryland is clearly putting big emphasis on keeping local products at home. Clearly went full court press for Quincy Wilson and just signed top 10 basketball recruit and local product Baba Oladotun. There is definitely a lot of local talent as the DMV is one of the best basketball areas in the country and there have been plenty of top football and track talent coming from the area recently too.

Why are you assuming he will even be coached by the Maryland coach? He might keep his entire current team and just show up on race day.

I am not assuming anything. I was responding to previous posts.
MD was the only team that allowed Smith to continue to coach Wilson. They cut Maryland's mens XC and Indoor Track program years ago so will they reinstate the program for everyone or just for Wilson. Will he participate as a UMD athlete during indoor or set his own schedule.
Did they fire Valmon or did they tell him the only way you stay as coach is if you let this happen.
Regardless this is a slap in the face for every Terp that was dumped when they said goodbye running programs we need to support our 4-8 football team.

I hate to go here…..but what separates Q in the 400 is his ability to finish the final 100m so strongly. Plus he did run a 1:50 800 1 1/2 years ago. There have been many good 800m runners under 5’10”. So I wouldn’t be surprised to see him go the way of Femke
