Not true. The BC high school coach isn't even listed on the Instagram post announcement. She has done almost nothing with the BC team or coaches over the last 2 years.

Blade also obliterated Leachmans time on the Woodbridge Xc Course.
Stanford really has no idea what they are purchasing here. They are making a purchase based on old, outdated results. That too me is scary and not a good gamble or purchase.

Let's see.
Number of times breaking the high school 5k record indoors:
1 - Leachman
1 - Hedengren
Number of times breaking the high school 5k record outdoors:
1 - Leachman
1 - Hedengren
Number of national high school xc championships won:
2 - Leachman
1 - Hedengren
Number of times qualifying for the Olympic Trials:
1 - Leachman
0 - Hedengren
And Leachman did all of those things BEFORE her senior year. When Hedengren started her senior year she had done none of those things.
So no, it's not "insane" to be mentioning Leachman in the same sentence as Hedengren.

The Woodbridge course that Leachman ran and the Woodbridge course that Blade ran were not the same exact course. The course had been changed.
And Stanford didn't "purchase" anything. Leachman didn't get an athletic scholarship.

This young lady did not run in 1 single track meet last spring, and did not run in 1 single cross country meet this fall. As a parent of another teenage female who does NXN in Portland, you cant sit here and tell me this is fair. I want to know who is pulling the strings. Next fall, this same young lady will probably still be claiming she has an "extended illness".
If your little Susie was looking at Stanford the coaches were wise to avoid her. You sound like you would be a headache as a parent of an athlete on the team. Bad parents are every college coach's worst nightmare.

What's interesting is that we often see on this board that runners should choose colleges for athletics over sport, the argument being very few US distance runners 'make it' to the top.
Yet this thread seems really disappointed she's going there. What am I missing?
It’s the same as for any other sport.
They aren't saying that. They think she made a smart decision.
This particular runner has been absent from the running scene for so long, that many (if not most) people involved with hs girls running are unaware of who she even is. There is a strong possibility that she may not even be one of their top 7 runners that actually suits up for races.

This is always the case. An injury prone phenom is always a better risk than a healthy 10:30 2 miler for the top programs.
The stories about coaches passing on phenoms due health and injury concerns, and instead recruiting slow undertrained runners with great form just aren't true.
We'll see how this plays out. If Leachman recovers, she's all American. If not she has earned a nice education.
Scholarship to Stanford. Who did better?

Leachman didn't get any scholarship money. They helped her get in, however. So on the flip side, not sure if anyone can remember someone as good as Leachman not getting any kind of athletic aid.
Worth remembering that Stanford also has need- and academic-based aid. I don't know this woman's academic stats or her family's economic situation, but I can say that Stanford put together a very generous aid package for me, the best that I got--and I was not any kind of a useful athlete. Perhaps she's not paying full freight for reasons other than athletic.
In any case, I wish her well, and I hope she's able to resume running at an enjoyable level. Long-term disability really sucks.
No. Stanford does not offer academic aid.
Congratulations to Ms. Leachman! She is an excellent student, based on what I've read, so Stanford is a good fit in that regard and it is in one of the most desirable parts of the country. Stanford is definitely taking a risk (assuming she is getting a significant scholarship) since she hasn't raced competitively in over a year. Hopefully whatever she is dealing with isn't something bigger than a musculoskeletal injury.
