I bought Klaas Lok's "Easy Interval Method" a few years back and it has made running in my 60s so much better! Getting rid of plodding easy runs / Zone 2 stuff helps my knees greatly. I replaced that work with cycling and all running is now intervals. I try to run on softer surfaces as much as I can. The pounding is what gets me and since I don't run marathons, doing a boatload of slower miles makes absolutely no sense. I still run sub 20:00 as a 64 year old but my goal is now fitness over racing.
The thing is, you will read about another person 60+ that's having big success and they will say the key is to get rid of the hard intensity stuff, and just run easy.
I think the "key" to success for older active people "athletes" if you will, is that it is even MORE highly specific than with younger people.
By 50+, the years and years of accumulated injuries, both big and small add up, and those are highly dependent on each individual. The cumulative affects of a nagging hammy here, and niggly knee there, then some lower back issues... even when you recover from them, they leave a mark. So if you recover at 95-98% of each issue, over 40 years that 2-5% adds up!
