Hundreds of runners hydrate at water taps installed for the event during the RUN IN LYON BY HARMONIE MUTUELLE running race in Lyon in France on October 5 2025.
You don’t pour your own fluids. You hold out your collapsible cup and volunteers fill it from a pitcher. Then you tuck your cup into the waistband of your shorts until you need it again. Lots of MUT races have been doing this for years.
I can’t say whether the environmental impact is justified compared to all the other impacts a mega race has. But when done correctly by experienced people, it’s not really much slower than grabbing a cup off a table.
agreed. For the elite, they should still have cups and bottles for them, as every second counts, but for the general public, who cares if you run 2:30 or 2:32? Every marathon is already a disaster on the environment, we should try to minimize the impact. That said,
You are so wrong.
Last year I ran 2:59:40 , what do you think would have happened with reusable cups ?
If it's like many food-related packaging, the paper will be lined with some sort of plastic film as a moisture barrier. Similar to how aluminum soda cans are plastic lined on the inside. Even newer polymers that are considered "eco" may still rely on specific controlled conditions to break down. It happens faster than older style plastics, which is good, but if you simply drop that eco-plastic into a random dirt patch, it's not terribly different than any old plastic.
tl;dr: paper food products may still contain plastic components and require proper disposal to not add plastic waste to whatever environment where they are used.
when will we get rid of these useless virtue signalling green loonies?
Make no mistake: this is total "green theatre.". Thousands will fly and drive from all over for this, burning fossil fuels, collect shirts and finisher's medals, but plastic cups are the problem? Come on.
The water tables at large marathons already look like a war zone, at this is going to make it so worse. It will impact non-elites with time goals the most. If you're looking to break 3 or qualify for Boston or whatever, this should be a deal killer for you. Find another marathon.
Of course if you sign up for a leisurely stroll and don't care how long it takes, sure, you can camp out at the aid stations. For anyone with a time goals, forget it.
My fear is that this will become the new industry standard. Looks like I'll be training myself to finish marathons without water.
I would like to see this for elites too. Then we would have the fastest known self supported marathon, cause who would stop to drink, when you can carry your own. So far Yuki has this record I believe
I was due to run Paris this year. But had to pull out due to an injury. I had purchased the cancellation insurance when I signed up. But the website to claim it back didn't work at all. And when I emailed them on their various contacts to enquire. There was no response. So I was out couple hundred quid. By contrast when Chicago had problems during the covid times, they rolled by registration forward like a proper company!
The Eurostar and Hotels I cancelled and got full refunds.
Paris' system obviously realised I didn't collect my bib nor start. So they sent me an early bird email for 26. But there was no discount and the price had risen by 20 Eur.
So I will never ever enter that event again! And I implore every one else not to!
Not sure why the water sachets (also electrolyte) used in South Africa (Comrades etc) haven't caught on wordwide. Much easier to grab, less volunteers even, much easier to sip on, crumple it up and stuff it in shorts, drop it at next station if you want, much much easier to pick up and recycle.
An expat in Australia was making them for a while, but big races didn't buy into it
