She would have been running in the late 80s, and this would have been a national level time then. I guess it possible, not sure if any old New York track fans could verify
This clip shows you my problem with Citius. They rush out to publish something without looking it up or being accurate. If you listen to the clip, it sounds like she's saying 1500 for 4:49.
I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY doubt she ran 4:49 fo the mile in HS. Wouldn't that make her one of the top in the country in HS? She graduated HS in 1987. Does anyone have TFN magazines lying around from 84, 85, 86 or 87?
Track and Field news doesn't appear to have full archives for the 1980s online or at least I couldn't find them.
I found this but didn't check out all of the links:
Jennifer Lopez was indeed an accomplished track athlete. Jennifer competed for the Starlets Track Club based in Staten Island and was coached by Dorothy Clinton.
Thanks, ChatGPT. Feeling left out of the conversation but want to contribute anyway, so use AI then post as an expert on LetsRun. Awesome.
I don't think that was chatgpt. Per above, it looks like there really was a Jennifer Lopez on the Starlets track club in 1983, and her age and location in NYC at the time would have checked out.

Honestly I can’t even find a lot of my college results from the early 2000s, expecting to find complete high school girls results from the 1980s isn’t realistic. If she has a verifiable 5:10 when she was around 13, and says she has a best of 4:49 for 1500m, I’d be inclined to believe her. In any case she was certainly a well-above-average distance runner, so good for her.

without looking, i would bet she does'nt know how far a mile is. i'm not saying she is a fraud, just infinitely stupid.
and won't have run a 449 mile in a million years down hill in a tail wind.
i just checked, no national nor state rankings according to chatgpt.
if Jennifer Lopez really ran a verified 4:49 mile in the mid-1980s, that would almost certainly have put her on national lists and made her notable — but there’s no verifiable meet result showing she did. Why I say that (evidence + context) Running Magazine (which picked up her podcast comment) notes a 4:49 mile from a high-schooler in the mid-1980s “would have stood out” and today would rank respectably on U20 lists — i.e., it’s not a trivial time. Canadian Running Magazine. Historic all-time lists for U.S. high-school girls (Track & Field News / Bring Back the Mile / Festival of Miles lists) show the very fastest HS girls have gone much faster (mid-4:20s to 4:30s), but a 4:49 would still be very competitive in most years and would likely place a runner on national rankings (top-50 or better, depending on the year). Those lists show only a handful of girls ever broke the mid-4:30s, so a 4:49 would have been noteworthy for the 1980s. Track & Field News+1. Local/state records and archived meet lists from the 1980s include performances near 4:49 (for example an IHSA all-time entry lists 4:49.1 from 1985), which demonstrates the time was within the realm of high-school competition then — but such marks were rare and therefore usually recorded in meet results and media. IHSA. Crucial point — no primary source found I (and others in the running community) can’t find a primary meet result, state championship entry, national-meet placing, or digitized newspaper box score that shows Jennifer Lopez with an official 4:49 (or comparable) high-school mile. Given how notable a verified 4:49 would be for a female HS athlete in the mid-1980s, we’d expect to see some archival trace — state meet results, a national meet entry, or at least a local paper write-up — but those haven’t turned up in searches so far. LetsRun. Conclusion / practical verdict If she truly ran an officially timed 4:49 in high school, she almost certainly would have been nationally ranked and that performance would appear in contemporary meet results or year-end lists. Because I could not find any primary verification, the safe position is that the 4:49 claim is unverified anecdote (she said it on a podcast). It may be a misremembered time, an informal hand-timed workout, or a different distance/time (e.g., 1600 m or 4:59/5:49), rather than a verified national-ranking race result. If you want, I can now: run a deeper search of NYC area newspapers (Daily News, Newsday, Bronx papers) and microfilm for Preston High School meet results in 1983–1987 (paywalled archives often), or try to find Preston High / alumni/yearbook track rosters or contactable archival sources.
should be the end of this, except this check should be called out, she will influence others with moron bs.

For fun I'm power-ranking all the known performances of J-Lo's 1983 season.
1. 9:43.6 4x800m NR, 2:27.9 3rd leg: Under-15 national record says it all, and though her split wasn't the fastest she had the same time as the anchor leg 2. 4:01.2 4x400m (2nd): She would have had to run around 60s, pretty impressive. 3. 2:28.6 800m (1st): About borderline with her 5:10 but the win gives the nod 4. 5:10 1500m (2nd): More impressive considering she won the 800m earlier 5. 4:07.1 4x440yds (1st): Not as fast as the 4:01.2 even with conversion, but it was a win 6. 9:56 4x880yds (1st): Her split was unknown, but an average 2:29 is about what she had already demonstrated in fitness 7. 5:22 1500m (2nd): It was early season, can be forgiven 8. 4:29 4x440yds (1st): 67.25s average might have been not much faster than what she went out for in an 800, but at least it was a win.

you do understand that staten island is almost in NJ and the bronx is up by westchester, right?
that it's possible on these articles you have "a" fairly commonly named jennifer lopez confused with "the" jennifer lopez.
she said she ran HS TF. as some have said, if she ran these type times, and if she's the 13/14 girl you think, she should also be putting up HS times even better than the youth nationals stuff.
i'd think someone putting up fast times would also do XC and show up there too.
i am sure she ran and could even have been good but she already misremembered the distance so her memory is glitched.
i looked up TX UIL at this time and it was right around a 5 flat to win state. went up to 505 in the early 90s.
without looking, i would bet she does'nt know how far a mile is. i'm not saying she is a fraud, just infinitely stupid.

See, liberals luv facts
when i saw like 10 down votes to zero upvotes, i downvoted myself, 11 to zero was a new personal record, trying to out do armstronglvs and those kind of guys. sadly there are two upvotes.
i recall an experience slightly along these lines, i was on a holiday as a junior runner, and this very fine young lady in high school joined me on the run, some how, scouting i suppose, and i would be doing six thirty a mile pace or better, which is a regular run, not to show off, she kept up and was talking, talk talk talk.
she said she ran to school, so i said how far, she said, i forget exactly like 3 miles, it took 10 minutes. i go hmmm. meanwhile we are doing more miles at that 630 pace. we finished up, and i was in love. we would keep in contact, and i spoke about elizabeth to arch jelley, who invited her to come by, this is how phenoms are spotted, just out there running with no clues.
anyhow, elizabeth never became a runner, and went on to a sensible life, i would guess as one of the most stunning women i ever met.
that said, my neighbor is hollywood, and appraised me as a world class cycleist at a dinner party, and i assure i can't hold the jockstrap of his waterboy, ....
You keep posting she's not on these lists, but it doesn't prove or disprove anything. If she ran 4:49, and the list has a top 10 that ends in the 4:3x range, then of course she's not on it; her time would be beyond the top 10.
I just want to say I had a really hot lady friend growing up who was talented at many things.
Junior year, she's favored to win the indoor conference in both hurdle events. She goes to Florida on Spring Break instead, quits the team when the coach threatens her. She seemed to laugh it off, made some people upset. She was good enough to place at the state meet and eventually walk on at D1 schools but junior year she quit to go on Spring Break.
