Agreed. I only skimmed DC Rainmaker's article and pulled up the patents at issue and noticed two huge errors right off the bat:

1. He got the filing date wrong by not taking into account that Strava claimed priority to a provisional patent application filed a year earlier. It may/may not impact the prior art analysis, but that's a huge error.

2. He never once even mentions the patent claims in his patent analysis. Any first-year (or heck, first-DAY) patent associate knows that the patent CLAIMS define the legal rights in a patent, not some summary language from elsewhere in the patent.

Instead of spending money on legal fees, Strava should've spent the money on paying DCRainmaker to provide positive coverage. He's been a real thorn in Strava's side.

that might be true for (some) runners but Strava is probably more important for cyclists, for example my running segs are few and of little interest but bike ones are a different league. Both in terms of how many there are and how competitive they are too.

I know Letsrun hates Strava, but a lot of people in this thread are seriously underestimating how powerful it is and the draw of social media in general. I would say the majority of everyday runners would prioritize Strava over using a Garmin. I think the companies are in a bit of a stalemate. If Strava bans Garmin users, then they lose a huge portion of their user base. However, Garmin can risk a lot reputational if they don’t allow their data to be uploaded to Strava. I think Strava is aware of this and is leveraging the fact they don’t have much to lose by bringing this lawsuit.

I have no beef with Garmin but very much prefer to run with my phone as I no longer run competitively so I side with Strava lmao

Strava filed for a dismissal of the suit “without prejudice” which means they preserved their right to refuse it if they want, possibly in amended form. So it doesn’t necessarily mean they gave up.

I canceled my Strava subscription when I read this on his site a while back. I also listed the suit as the reason I canceled when Strava asked. I am sure I am not alone. Have fun with your IPO when your paid subscribes are jumping off the boat in droves....

can't rmb when's the last time i opened strava other than to stalk pro runners' training or participate in the hobbyjogger norwegian threshold grp. i only need my watch and a pair of shoes to run, strava can pipe down
