You'll get overwhelmingly downvoted for this and so will I but this possibility is important to have out there because it is just that - a possibility. A couple of interesting things around this injury.
The idea that he injured it in the fall at the end of the semi-final is kind of ridiculous. If anything was going to be injured it might have been his wrist, his shoulder, maybe his hip because that is what takes the impact in a fall. Really think about it, how does a calf muscle get injured there due to a fall? I even heard "his other foot whacked into it". That must have been an almighty whack and if it was some kind of contact injury then it would have been there right from the start of the race, as it would have been in his warmup, and not just after 800m.
It's possible that he was cramping during the race and extended his muscle as it was cramping and consequently damaged it. That is the most likely situation. We know it was extreme weather, especially for the 1500m program but they still just running 1500m. They are on the track for three and a half minutes and not thirty. It is hard to believe that the guy who doesn't race a lot because he focuses on major championships and has a history of always getting it right in these major finals, all of a sudden didn't get it right and either messed up his nutrition or went in overly fatigued which is really the major cause of calf muscle strains. Pretty hard to just "strain a calf" especially as a 1500m runner because there isn't really anything explosive in a 1500m race. Ask yourself this question, how many 1500m runners at this level can you remember doing that in a race with a non-contact injury?
Final thing with calf muscle injuries - if you've ever had one they feel like someone had literally stabbed you in the back of the the muscle. They aren't just a dull strain type of injury, you really have to stop running. Kerr still finishes in 4.11 and he pulled up with 600m to go in about 2.15. Not bad to be able to run another 600m at 5 minute mile pace especially running the risk of really critically injuring yourself. Nobody wants to believe the alternative here which is understandable (not sure why, but okay) but if you take emotion out of it and look pragmatically at this, not a lot is adding up here including the radio silence. I don't even want or need an MRI to tell me that.
