"I feel like the winner because I’ve spent five years in a row running 10 or 15 races. Running isn’t just about doing one or two. It’s about being consistent, running a lot, because this is why sport exists — to compete. Not just to challenge yourself twice a year.”
Brother…the sport doesn’t exist simply so the best athletes can face each other at a single championship. It’s all about consistency, and developing a presence/identity through regular competition. If an athlete competes sparingly, don’t be surprised when general interest in said athlete declines, regardless of their talent.
Naser looked happy. Paulino on the other hand… she’s 28 and Syd is 26. She’ll never win again but somehow she’s still the champ… Naser didn’t say anything like that

I say Paulino looked better than Syd on the home straight. She'll win. Her stupid antics in the semis earned her the blind lane but something tells this is about to develop like Warholm vs Benjamin.

That’s the best lane. You’re going to act like WVN didn’t run 43.02 out of that lane? If you look at the last 100 splits, Syds was faster. Nope she’ll never win a gold if Syd is in the race again. Maybe she’ll get lucky and Syd will train for the 200 next.

If you look at their final 100m splits, SML was 0.10s faster than Paulino’s.
5 years running 10 or 15 races and none of them were faster than Sydney's today.
Yep, and if someone can beat you decisively at your specialty event after only one year of seriously trying it then that just means they were the superior athlete all along.
At least Paulino can still retire with her charity gold from Paris last year. How kind of Sydney to give her that at least.

She sounds like a NY Yankees or Dallas Cowboys fan… “I won a lot in the past”. The sport is head to head competition, on one day, on the biggest stage. And you got schooled. In other words, ALL THOSE YEARS OF WORK YOU PUT IN MEAN NOTHING BECAUSE SOMEONE WHO WAS BORED WITH HER PRIMARY EVENT CAME IN AND EMBARRASSED YOU.
Those two teams shouldn’t be lumped together. Cowboys haven’t been to the Super Bowl since winning it after the 1995 season, and they’ve had multiple losing seasons since then, including last year. Yankees were in the World Series last year, won it in 2009, and recently clinched their 33rd consecutive winning season.
Can we talk about how she said she won't stop until she has the WR, as if SML isn't closer to it than she is? She must realize that she'll never get it because 1.) there's no reason to think she can run 47.6 and 2.) It's pretty likely SML will lower it further...

She just ran sub-48 from the blind lane. She can do it.

I doubt running in the "blind lane" makes much difference - ask WVN.
Interesting take on an athlete that had the guts to take on another event.
That's my thoughts exactly.
I mean you can curse your luck that a better athlete than you decided to run in the event you've made a career running, and then beat you - I get that. And back in your hotel you you can throw any kind of tantrum you want, I'm fine with that.
But come on don't say that on camera - that just comes off really poorly. Sad that in the moment she couldn't quite hold it back here.
Thats clearly not what she ment. There are 3 possible interpretations
1. Shes upset that Syd hasn't raced the 400m much and just comes in and wins - there is no evidence that supports this interpretation - its clearly a wrong interpretation
2. Shes upset Syd doesn't race as much as her (e.g. barely shows at the Daimond League or other big mid season events) and just comes in and wins WC or olympics - this is possible, and this is the shade interpretation intended by the OP, not reason 1. Its not really valid, but SML doesn't seem to go to the Daimond Leage and face the real tough competition in the middle of the year (but grand slam track did sort of change that).
3. Shes just happy that she races a lot and is saying I'm a winner for trying, no shade meant - also possible.
I honestly think she meant 3, but there might have been a bit of 2 in there.
