Some serious 20:20 hindsight being applied here. He came back with a 3:45 mile at Pre last year after a similar period of time out with a very similar injury. It was not fantasy to think if he turned up to race he could medal.

However, recent interviews about the injury have not been encouraging and his team told him to not to go, but it's all guesswork for us as we only see media reports.

I think he was just desperate to compete and must have known he wasn't ready.

As for those of you talking about the down votes, the voting system on these boards are absolute crap. Everyone just upvotes what they like to see and it doesn't reflect reality.

It’s hard to pinpoint exactly, but it was unlike Pre where he had a bad injury but then nearly 3 months of good training. This time it sounds like his training was littered with setbacks and it was until the last month he had any real momentum. As soon as I saw his remarks about maybe not running the 1500, I began to think making the final was a stretch.

Yeah I think reality set in for him once he got to Japan and realized he didn't feel like he usually does.

Earlier he admitted he would be a long shot. What I like about him is he goes for it! His motivation is competing. He takes the risk instead of ducking competition.

If he's in no shape to race the 1500m, he's in no shape to race the 5000m. His being one of the best 1500m runners in the world was why he was so dominant in the 5000m in previous years.
