We changed the title of the thread to make it more descriptive and less judgemental. The title was initially "Washed Hoare doesn't make Australian 1500m team."
I don't care what you say, a trials system takes all the politics and schmoozing out of the equation. 1 2 3 and if you've got a qualifier you're in. This crap with AA has been going on for a long time, long before Bideau.
You only had to look back at the Paris marathon selections to know that things aren't above board. Everyone knows that they need NB in their corner for getting into high quality track meets in Europe. It is what it is but it is a terribly flawed system for those athlete trying to make a break through. Good on Seth for his selection without using the MTC/NB connection although this is extremely rare.
Maybe Olli should have stopped racing after running 3:31 at Rome Diamond League? Spencer & Thomas seemed so confident of their selections that they stopped racing at the end of July and didn't not race for the remainder of the qualifying window. AA should add a line in the selection policy to indicate that your manager's name will be part of the criteria or maybe that's what they mean by "Any additional factors deemed relevant by the Selection Committee"
I disagree, I should preface I'm an Ollie Fan because of coffee club and his Comm Games win, he was arguably the second best 1500m runner in the world that year and got dumped out of world in the Semi Final, to come back and knock out a quality field for Gold was class.
However since the injury his has been a story of the psychological toil of injury. Bullet proof beforehand. A fragile mess afterwards.
Also based on the selection criteria posted there is a strong case to ignore the SB from Rome and go with the younger Guy.
4.11.4.1 Likelihood of a top-8 finish.
For Ollie based on current form I would say this is close to zero. He wouldn't make the final if he went let alone finish in the top half.
It's debatable whether Thomas will fare better but his liklihood is certainly higher
4.11.4.2 Whether an athlete qualified via performance standard or ranking.
4.11.4.3 Demonstrate high-level performance throughout the Qualification Period.
Ollie to his detriment had demonstrated the opposite.
4.11.4.4 Proven ability to peak at major championships.
Ollie has whiffed in all World and Oly games he has been a part of except for the 2022 Commonwealth games.
I feel bad for Ollie but this was 100% the right call for Australian Athletics
Idk about you but I know where the immediate improvement can come from... Hopefully this lights a fire in his belly and go to another level with a clean nutrition plan
I feel for Olli, but he absolutely doesn't deserve to make the team. He didn't even make the semis in Paris and the 1500m is somehow twice as competitive this year. I don't think he even has an outside chance of making the final this year—even at his best he only ever made a single global final—whereas Myers and Spencer obviously both stand decent chances, and Jude Thomas has at least as good a chance as Olli and could use the experience.

Ollie ran 3:47 / 3:29 and won a tough comm games before bi-carb and on old school, not double threshold training.
He won the London DL and got maybe 6 top 3’s in stacked races including DL finals.
He legit ‘made it’ to almost the top of the sport. Next step was global medals.
This new wave has knocked him. Some injuries, self confidence issues and burnt out.
Rojo you love to mock him because he never progressed to getting medals like Kerr has. Plus some clear animosity from whatever happened between LRC and the swoosh during the Alberto days.
Rojo (ironically like Ritz?!) doesn’t realize it is absolutely brutal at the top of world 1500m racing!!
Finally the setup at OAC has been bad for a while. Ritz hasn’t adapted to more modern ways to get very fit. Endless specific work has worn these guys and girls down. The competition has surpassed the OAC boulder. OAC Europe the JV squad are showing them up!
All of the below should be making world finals.. not sat at home. Ollie, Yared, Mario, Morgan, Klecker, Monson, Markzevic, Sinta, Ramsden, Jacobs. That’s down to setup and coaching. The talent is there.. everyone of them has won an ncaa title (minus klecker who got robbed during Covid).
I think a huge component of the 1500 for coaches right now is trying to get everyone so fit for over distance races (3k/5k) that some athletes end up paying the price by not touching on elements that got them their contract in the first place. Adam Spencer at Wisco was running 800s the season that he ran the big pr at the DL. I’m not saying Oli is a 800/1500 guy but I do think mixing it up and not just hammering threshold doing longer workouts is beneficial.
i feel like Hobbs is similar. The faster he is in the 800 the stronger he is. The stronger he is over 3k/5k the slower he is over 800. Someone needs to figure out what Laros does and incorporate that type of work being he’s not only strong but he has world class finishing speed that’s been developed over the last two years.
The USA isn't perfect, but at least we don't use this corrupt and shady nonsense to select our teams. It kind of fits out national ethos in a way: it doesn't matter who you are or who your sponsor is, show up on the day and you get your ticket.
Remind me of the background of your president?
Not sure what your point is here, but yeah we don't just bar controversial people from running like France did and Germany is trying to do with the AFD. We also don't overturn election results like Romania because a conservative won.
Trump was the more popular candidate (and won the electoral college) so he is the president. The Republican party did not want him to be the nominee in 2016, and the elites did not want him to be president either time. He won nevertheless, because that's what the people wanted. I'm sure you would have rather a board just "selected" a more tasteful candidate? That's not how we do things here.

A trials system works well in taking the politics away, but it's also kind of a luxury only the US can afford because of the depth of talent (which is related to population size to a degree). The UK works with a system where there is one discretionary pick in each event, which is designed to protect medal shots. A good example this year: Keely Hodgkinson wasn't in a place with her fitness to run the UK trials. You could just say bad luck, sucks for you, someone else gets a shot. But that's leaving the UKs only likely gold medallist at home. Countries with few medal hopes can't afford to leave any of them on the bench.
The way to look at it is what is drop-off like in each event between the top two and the next three athletes. In the US, even the fourth and fifth place finishers in any event at the trials will be quality athletes. In most other countries, when you get down to fourth and fifth, you're probably looking at national level athletes who wouldn't get anywhere near making an NCAA final let alone a Worlds final.
Love Geordie, Ollie and Morgan… but really think a coaching change is needed. Too many injuries between them all. Kind of wish Nike swoosh and Mike Smith would take a gamble on the three. All too talented to be spending their prime years injured.

I love Mike Smith as much as the next guy but lets not act like his group haven't suffered a fair share of injuries too. Woody,Drew Bosley and Nuir have all had injuries over the oast 18 months and it showed at USAs this year imo. Luis has also had a string of injuries over the same time period but runs for Guatemala meaning he has more time to work his way into fitness. Smith has Nico and Ritz has/had Yared as their starboys but outside of them, their pro athletes have pretty comparable track records imo

Have there been injuries for Olli this year? It feels like more of a disconnect between training which he seems to be saying is going well and racing (which isn’t going well). Perhaps that means he’s racing his workouts or just doing too much mileage…

Agree wholeheartedly. It's especially frustrating watching Beamish spend so much time injured, he's such an absurd talent. I feel like he could have won that Olympic steeple last year the way the race played out.
I know every group has their injuries, but it certainly seems like OAC has a bit more than their fair share and it's hard not to think that coaching isn't playing some role in that.

A weird thing I've noticed us how Gadgety either Ritz or On as a brand are.
They never hit it I'm Depth but last year they were getting Olav Anderson Bu (or whatever Blummenfeld's coach is named) The Lactate Guru to advise on physiology that was for only some of them McDonald and Monson and Mario from memory. All obviously got injured but is that part of their programme still functioning? Did it get turfed out when they broke down?
They always spoke of how much Ritz resisted Double threshold, this year Ollie started it. But not everyone. How did that go did it help or hinder, will they adopt it more widely?
What about the heat training George was speaking about. Again is this an App and did they just pick up a sponsor they are plugging or is it part of the plan? What was the story with the tie in with the Roches?
Why did George have to send David Roche HR data to work out his zones. Surely Ritz and OAC do this as a matter of course.
They spoke about Klecker doing blood flow restriction on a treadmill. this sounded like some nonsense picked up on insta. Was this endored by the OAC or Ritz?
Ollie spoke about working with a sports Psych, did Ritz organise that or the Oz federation?
And mostly when they are frequently injured why is it that they seem to be left to their own devices Bike, stair master, swim, whatever you're having yourself. is it just a case of programming 60mins cross training and a treatment from their PT who seems to travel in and not be based in Boulder (Jason I think his name is)
Basically, so many questions.

Ties goes to the place at the national championships and Oli beat Jude there. Recent form yes maybe Jude, but idk, they don't have nationals who know. Oli has a better PR this season and like we see with the Ethiopians burning themselves early in the season chasing times, Oli was building for worlds.
If Jude ran like a 3:29 or something, ok fine, but I think Oli could run a 3:31 or 3:30 in the right race right now, he freaking did it in June.
