I define "bad team" in this context as "any team that is not the undisputed best in the world." Even then it looks pretty dumb. Don't put some dumbass quote on a shirt. It won't ever look good. That's the great thing about cross country, though. You can suck, talk all sorts of shit, and never have to back it up.
FWIW, I always wanted to make a shirt that said "Run Like You Stole Something."
I wouldn't do the football thing.
I love running, and yes it is difficult and gut wrenching. But people get their legs broken playing football.
I feel like I am a pretty nice guy, but these are the worst ideas that I have ever read.

Here is the deal, girl's teams can have clever slogans, guys team should stick to simple shirts without slogans.

We hade a pretty out-there coach when I was in high school who designed our shirts one year, and they had our schools name on the center chest area. Navy lettering on a grey shirt.
The back simply said, "relax"
Cocky shirts have to be funny and should be worn with a sense of irony.
Whoever said that it's ok to be cocky and suck was right. This is not the same thing as being a gear bitch in a road race because a slow XC runner in high school or college knows he's slow. By being cocky he's showing that he doesn't care and that he loves the sport. Think of the boxing match in Cool Hand Look--you just keep coming at them with nothing. The beauty of the sport is that we respect personal achievemnt more than any other sport in the world. The captain who won the race is right there by the chute, screaming and bringing home the JV guys.
As long as you're not a genuine asshole about it, I say that you've earned the right to wear a cocky shirt as long as you work your f**kin tail off.
