You have a good point that the kids had to say they wanted to run, but what you're missing is that kids, starved for their father's love and attention, often will choose to do things they think will gain that love and attention, because they think the parents want them to do those things. I know this from experience with my own kids. Yes, they said it, but they probably did that because they knew Gjert wanted them to do it, and in the sister's case, because otherwise all his attention was focused on Jakob, Filip, and Henrik. Indeed, because she was so far away from the professional level and wasn't dominating age group competition (also the case for Filip until he was around 17 or 18), he still didn't pay much attention to her when she was running and that was a major source of contention between them before the 'incident'.
