Staying healthy, better training, and belief in the process.

He’s clearly stronger and more explosive now. I would attribute a lot of that to heavy lifting, plyos, and drills. It seems like a small thing but sometimes that makes all the difference. Of course he is also now years into heavy aerobic training.

Any of you guys remember the post a couple of years ago where many people doubted that Nico could break 1:54 in the 800, because he was slow and had reached his peak. I wish I could find the thread. One guy kept saying Nico had limits, because he was a strength runner...whatever that is. This poster probably quit running, because he finally kissed a girl and is no longer on Letsrun, but I sure as heck would love to hear about this strength runner phenomena again if he is still on here.

Only 2 Americans (male) have made the transition from college to legitimate medal contenders in the 5 and 10k in the last 40 years or so. Grant Fisher and Galen Rupp. I'm not counting Lagat.

Probably discovered Bicarb. Help turn that 28 minute effort into an 18 minute effort via lessening the effects of metabolic waste early on. But then again, they all are likely using it. When everyone in the field can close with a sub 4, it's anyone's race if it's tactical for the first 20 laps. Causality was on his side.

i come from a place with no hills, and moved to a place with lots of hills

i was very weak on hills, a nightmare.

then i moved to mt. eden auckland, and ran up that volcano 3 or 4 times before breakfast every day for three months.

after that, i pretty much dropped everyone on the hills except elites.

that is one hill of a story.

you don't know really if you're good at something if you never really trained.

and some people are plastic and elastic, have adaptability, while others have little to none, particularly with the muscle between their ears.
