In light of federal research funds being trimmed and DOGE cuts, would some of these institutions without good sports programs start gutting sports to make up for the aforementioned cuts? UTD cutting TF/XC means that $500-750K now reverts back to the general university budget. Sacrifice a sport to save some teaching/research jobs would be an easy sell to administrators.
it is a shame for the kids but not every school needs sports. I think club and intramural sports serve a student body better than an athletic department.
Also, how many DI’s and DII programs are there in Texas? 50? 60? There is a lot of opportunity.

If UT-Dallas were putting $500-750K into their XC/T&F program that would be incredibly generous. Lower level P4 schools and upper level G5 schools have XC/T&F operation budgets LESS than that figure range, and do quite well.
With 50* XC/T&F (25 men / 25 women) combined shelling out 10K per year to attend a state school they generate 500K; which is enough to be self-sustainable* and potentially provide money for the general university budget.
This is both fiscally wise from an overall university operating budget and value added in terms of student experience and alumni building.
*These are the 50 walk-ons. Of course, the game has/is changing and scholarshiping/NIL is key to success. But in terms of self-sustaining, it pays for itself (see D3 models, for example).
Aren’t they transitioning to D1 status? How can they cut 6 sports and still be D1 they will not have enough countable sports unless they plan to add some??
They are now likely going to have to transition to NAIA
Some more info: the Athletic Director was informed of this 6 weeks ago, but the coaches didn’t find out until Monday morning, when news was released. It’s not like this school is broke. The past year they hired a ton of nonessential support staff. Men’s basketball is currently in Europe right now. Golf took a trip to Hawaii last year. The university just paid to fly out AD to Times Square for a promotion. We were arguably going to have top notch education for a D2, probably behind Colorado School of Mines, and were going to be one of the largest D2’s by population in the nation. It was time to break the stigma of being a nerd school by bringing in high level athletes also wanting high quality education. DFW also has a booming job market.

they just did a sponsorship with new balance which is a big running shoe company. they did a giveaway night at a rangers game. i don't think they're actually hurting. i assume the running staff said if you want to be good at d2 we could really use a track, and they got cut more for the ask than for what it would take year to year for a team. they also agreed to cover 25-26 scholarships for the athletes getting messed over, so it's not like they even save all that cost. i thought announcing it this late is awful to the players and tacky but i think the idea was more to do a clean aesthetic break before d2 and less to do right by the athletes. this way d2 there will not be associated with running and they won't start d2 then chop it. cheapskating and cutting sports as you try and go up division(s) doesn't feel like a success recipe. it's about appearances. UT-D just has always struck me as a tad off. it should have been a massive overdog at d3. i agree with the poster re being a second "mines" at d2.
if i wanted to be really chippy, covering 1 year and not 4 i(like loyola marymount) s indicative of who you're dealing with. they realize they screwed kids and don't want to be sued. but they're not really standing behind the kids' commitments or full sales pitch they had coaches out there giving.
UT-D is not really interchangeable with most of d2. you signed up for a freak. act like you're a special place.
The UT system is very odd. Kids who are in the top 10% of their class in a public HS in Texas get automatically admitted to UT Austin. The remaining in state spots are extremely competitive. My son is going to a private school. The kids who are trying to get into UT have schools like Rice, Emory, UVA and Georgetown as their fall back schools. They are told as freshman that they need to be in majority AP classes from sophomore year on and have to have an A average. For out of state admissions to UT, the acceptance rate is 3%.
But, if you go to a UT system school for two years and transfer, the admissions rate is 30-40%. So, the UT system has seen rapid growth, especially in the big metro areas where kids can commute and live at home to save money. Also, the UT system schools (San Antonio, Arlington, Dallas, etc.) have very high acceptance rates and cheap in state tuition. In state tuition is around $10k. So, these schools end up as the default state school for many TX students. And as Texas has grown rapidly, the demand for spots at these schools has also grown.
The UT system schools are all huge. But there is a lot of variation depending on whether the school is more of a commuter school or is one where kids come from all across TX. UTEP has always been more of a traditional college with a lot of students living on campus. That has allowed them to have Div I teams. UT SA and UT Arlington have followed along, but are more like a commuter school. UT Dallas has only been a four year college since 1990 and has grown very rapidly since then. So, the school is primarily a commuter school and does not have the support for sports that the other schools have. That may change over time as more and more TX students are opting for the non-Austin UT schools and the Dallas area has seen massive growth over the past two decades. But for now, UT Dallas is just not a school that is going to do much with athletics.
UTEP is a commuter campus, has been for your entire life.
