Statements like this in doping sports are always damage control. Before his confession, Armstrong would publicly bemoan how doping busts in cycling hurt the image of the sport and undercut the work of clean athletes like himself. I do not buy that any top marathoner is clean.

Ha ha ha, really? Where do you see seethe? No seethe. Just trenchant retribution for all the causal accusations hurled around here all the time against African runners. Does it bug you so much only when it’s one of “your girls”? It clearly bugs you a lot even though you have no proof Sisson or for that matter any runner is clean. Other than she said so, that is, which I adequately pointed out to her credit.

How do we know if Sisson is clean, or any of these elite athletes?

I pretty much agree, but what about when the governing body legitimately gets it wrong? What do you do then? I still believe we need a less corrupt governing body than WADA.

Sisson is a class act. If you see Coburn's posts, she went way harder against Ruth than Emily did. I'm not saying Coburn isn't a class act, but she was much more direct.

I can totally believe a 2:18 marathoner is clean. It's not guaranteed, but it doesn't sound any major alarms for me. She seems like one of the most down to earth runners with no big ego, doesn't really promote herself in the same way as some other elites, just seems to enjoy the sport, and feels like she got robbed in a major marathon runner up to a now suspended athlete.

Sisson didn't come runner up to Houlihan in the biggest marathon of her career. Africans get popped all the time. This is the first I've seen Emily post about a drug ban as she was denied a Chicago win by a suspended athlete. It's personal for her.

This. If you got popped for cheating, all your records up to then should be wiped from the books, because they're all suspect. You should have to pay back all money's won. Make restitution. Because anything less is not enough.

Sisson should try to go after prize $$$ she was robbed of in Chicago.

An American runner testing positive should be personal for Emily too.

Statistics. You need it understand Tests

It sounds great and moral that any athlete that tests positive losses everything. But unless you stick your head in the sand you know that tests can have both false positives and false negatives. So where and how do you set your threshold, especially in a world where individuals are different than a group that is used.

If you set your threshold for a Positive at a very strict level you will get more Positives and fewer negatives but you will get more false Positives. If the consequences are severe is it fair to penalize people that you have made a testing error?

So the thresholds have to be set with a balance of the two types of errors (plus Inconclusive, for whatever reason like mishandled samples). And the case where your "positive" is not for a performance enhancing drug but a masking agent. Fortunately in this case where the threshold is low (was it 2?) and the actual value was in the thousands, but what if the test value was one percent above the threshold?

You also have to balance legal issues (court cases that challenge the testing or the setting of the threshold).

And the protocol calls for an A and B sample. How many times have yhe results differed. A number of false positives have come from handling the samples incorrectly. The case of Bernard Lagat quite likely illustrates this, the A sample not only was not kept cold as required but was exposed, I think, 100F temperatures and wasn't tested within the required window. The B sample was handled correctly. But many here label him a drug cheat.

Now consider the population used for deciding what thresholds are Best. Were they made from white European males? Were they highly trained or ordinary people whose profiles are different?

yeah, not sure why people aren't mentioning this. emily got second in that race. The $$ from winning that, as well as being known as the champion in the Chicago Marathon is worth a great deal as part her career as a marathon runner as well as simply a runner who wants to win. Of course this is personal, why wouldn't it be?

Thats why it is so clear to anyone why Shorter kept going to the IOC about Cierpinski for decades, especially after we had the Stasi file opened up. Shorter should be on that short list of two time Oly champions in the marathon, not Cierpinski.

Of course Emily is going to say something. It would be weirder for her NOT to.

If you cancelled every result and athlete ever had once they tested positive, (which I fully support) can you imagine the turnover and how short athlete's careers would be.

They certainly wouldn't race again after a wr in their chosen discipline.

I think a lot of people here are missing the point. Let’s not make this about racism or Shelby; Sisson clearly spoke out about this because she was runner-up in Chicago to Chepngetich who is now a known cheat, regardless of when she started to dope.

In addition to the above, Sisson has been *extremely* transparent about how hard she pushes her body to try to compete on the world stage, and often to the detriment to her body. Going into the Tokyo Olympics 10K she was injured and overtrained. Last year at the Olympics, she was very vocal about having trouble recovering and running multiple marathons in a year and how it was breaking down her body. I thought specifically of these instances when reading her Ruth post.

Anyone who follows the sport and its athletes close enough knows that Emily is not the type to dope. She has a life outside of running and is very grounded; she just is obviously a generational talent. Let’s not forget she was a high school record holder- she’s always had the talent.

I also think it’s pretty awesome she is only the 2nd non-East African to run 2:18 after Paula, who we all know was likely doping.
