Last year there was one athlete who peaked at exactly the correct time, to the nearest day, and his name was Cole Hocker. There is a lot of mileage between now and September.

this is the main thing.
who's peaking when?
if you are running like 348 now and yet to sharpen properly, there is zero cause for alarm.
running a WR now, well that's not the right thing to do if you want to peak in Sept.
that said, Laros is just getting started, running cross, then 3, 5k, the 3k was lousy but in a training block, and of course there was needless panic.
i remember Simmonds, changed up things to scoop his first worlds medal, silver and his coach said you're not going to win in June, as he was training through, and they got the peak right.
Nuguse shouldn’t have drifted into the second lane.
I agree. That being said, props to Nuguse for leaving it all out there.
Can't help but contrasting the strain he showed versus the winners in the women's steeple & 5000m (both big drops in the WRs); makes one wonder about doping, doesn't it?
If Laros hadn't left it so late, he would have destroyed everyone. If he had been in Paris last week he would have ran 3:26.
Very well said. All that stupid pre race hype about goose and Hocker now just seems like PED coping. They just felt guilty that they couldn’t do their PEDs enough justice if they don’t come away with 3:42. PEDers tend to be trap on a loop of emotional guilt and suffer a lot of moral entrapment issues.
Let this be final neither Hocker nor the goose will ever taste the 3:42 barrier outdoors PED or no PED. They put on a an ugly display for the discerning eye like ours.
Laros is for real. He is 20, he doesn’t need to try he will be the future WR holder because youth is on his side. Jakob at 20 didn’t have a 3:45:94 mile PB. The goose is 26 and so is Hocker, both pass their used by dates.
Yeah I think Strand has a 3:45 in him (he wouldn’t have won though due to the pacing, it would have to be even). Kessler won’t make the team, between Hocker and Strand for first.
Kessler can’t even outkick a 31 year old Jake Wightman in training how is he 1) clean 2) a real talent? Kessler has been giving mix signals to us in terms of whether he has what it takes to be Jakob type talent. Laros has shown to be just that but not Kessler. Boohoo
Kessler beat laros when it mattered most last year
just be excited there’s several young Guys who all look sharp
Laros has been a freakshow talent since age 17 so this should not be a great surprise. Super gifted and only 20 yrs old. Truth be told, I was thinking 3rd in 3:47flat. This race was a level beyond that, and it's great to see young runners getting it done against established guys. I expect Laros to post a huge mark at 3000m next year. Great range and can cover distances from 800-5000. Rare ability.
19 yr old Meyers runs 3:47.50.....Sensational. Another young phenom.
Fisher drops way down and goes 3:48.29? Very impressive. He's such a solid competitor. Always shows up.

Kessler should be fine going forward, but he is not on the same talent level as Laros.
Laros is more than 2years younger than Kessler. This cannot be discounted.

I think he's as talented as laros,if his 800/1500 pb's are anything to go on. He's every bit as fast,if not faster.Laros is better at 3000's and 5000's. Kessler has run an 800 close to 1.43. Laros hasnt.
Props to Nuguse for going for El G's world record. He looked like he was on pace until around 1400m, when the green lights disappeared and the white lights (set to 3:45.14) caught up. Nuguse's stride really collapsed in the final 200m. He definitely had a 3:44 in him today with more even pacing and a less aggressive first half. In that case, Laros wouldn't have beaten him.
NO NO NO.
I was super impressed by Nuguse going for it but please let's be honest. He didn't have a 3:44 in him "with more even pacing and a less aggressive first half." The proper phrase would be this - "Nuguse might have had a 3:44 in him if he'd been able to suck off of Jakob the whole race."
At 800, Yared was 1:51.4 - that's is 3:44 flat pace. So he went out on 3:44 flat pace and blew up.
He most certainly wasn't sniffing at world record at 1400. At 1200 meters, he was on 3:45.7 pace and he faded off that.
Now, was it possible he got the WR at 1200? Technically, yes. If you take Nuguse's 1st 1200 and then Laros' last 409, you'd barely break the WR. You'd run like 3:42.9.
this post epitomizes the bad reputation this board gets.
We all have runners we root for more or less, perhaps we do or don’t identify with them based on personality, style, training group, things they have posted or said in interviews, etc. But there is just no need to be a jerk about these athletes. love letsrun for the discussion and commentary you can't get anywhere else but this kind of post comes off as mean spirited and pathetic hiding behind an anonymous post. This vitriol adds nothing useful to the discussion.
Anyhow, fun race to watch. However did make me realize how much I miss watching Jakob in these DLs this summer.
