The problem with Europeans and Canadians evaluating the American healthcare system is that they’re too stupid and lazy to study the history and see how we got here.

Ironically, they are right about it being bad, but they don’t know why. The American system is largely the result of a World War II price control intervention, which had the unintended consequences of creating employer based healthcare.

The problem with this system is that there is no incentive for consumers to shop price and for healthcare providers to provide the lowest prices. That’s why it’s so expensive. It also has the obvious defect of people losing their healthcare when they’re separated from their jobs. The latter necessitated the need for more government intervention in the form of more programs, cobra, and the bankrupt Medicare.

To truly reform the system, you essentially have to start over from scratch and implement a free market system. However, that’s politically infeasible so we are just gonna muddle along with this inefficient system indefinitely.

In summary, the problem with our system is that there is too much government, not too little.

National insurance in the UK is a separate tax that employers and employees pay which goes towards the NHS and pensions.

PAYE (income) corporation tax and VAT on sales and other taxes go towards the defense spending and everything else broadly speaking. The government is not taking anything away from this to pay for the NHS so it has no bearing on defense spending

It is all about priorities for a long time the UK was not under any threat. Putin has changed things and defense spending has been increased.

Germany is already at the same level of GDP spending towards NATO as America

Broadly speaking though Brits spend on health through national insurance tax and Americans pay individually for health insurance. They are both a form of insurance. People's circumstances can change and the national insurance system is a lot more civilised.
