I think most had suspected Mantz would be running Chicago this fall, but Chicago has officially confirmed it in a press release. And Mantz has said specifically that he is targeting Khalid Khannouchi's 2:05:38 American record, which has stood since 2002.
Mantz ran 2:05:08 on Boston's non-record-eligible course in April.
“After Boston, where I finished with guys who have run 2:02 and 2:03, it doesn’t feel like a stretch to say I can run 2:05:30 on a looped, flat course.”
...if he runs decently in Chicago and recovers, he's thinking about running the US world cross country championships in December and the world cross country championships in Tallahassee in January, which is why he'd pass on Valencia?
Then again, he'd have more time to recover if he ran Berlin, but I get that he runs Chicago because it's a Nike event, as opposed to Berlin, which is adidas.

Oops, I forgot to put US world cross country championships TRIALS in December.

I want to float a couple thoughts for the BYU-alum Marathon team this fall.
Conner Mantz - I think he breaks the American Record.
Clayton Young - he has talked a lot about doubling this fall, either WC/NYC or WC/Valencia. Regardless, I think he hits 2:06 high for at least one marathon.
Casey Clinger - I think he breaks the American Record for fastest American Debut Marathon, if he doesn't run NYC. He is the current American 25k record holder and has been looking unbelievable in workouts. I'm waffling between 2:07 low and 2:06 high, I think the only thing he lacks is the strength to keep running fast past the wall at 21 miles. Would love to see 2:06 high, I think it's realistic too.
Joey Nokes - his collegiate career ends this upcoming Wednesday. I think he'll run a fall marathon for fun. The farmteam is not in the same shape as the pros, but I could see him break 2:10, get 2:09 high.
Creed Thompson - is in a weird spot with his college eligibility. Someone who knows him personally would better be able to assess this, because I think it depends largely on NIL and if he wants to go for a master's. My guess is that he returns to school.
Chill out with the insults and the politics homie. I ain’t political.
Are you talking about Ryan Hall? Didn’t he retire because he refused to take testosterone even when he had a deficit?
You implied that I’m some sort of “racist” and then try to backpedal with “I don’t have a political bone in my body” and “chill out?” Give me a break dude. You doubled down on “Kyle.”
I’m not going to do your homework for you. You can do your own due diligence on who might’ve had Tue’s for gray zone chemicals and vitamins. There are only a handful of American 2:06s and 2:07s prior to Mantz/Young. Thyroid supplementation was common.
You know who else was breaking all kinds of records from 1999 through the early 2000s? A very white Texan by the name of Armstrong, along with other white names like Tyler Hamilton and Floyd Landis.
But, continue on about race since you think you are “evolved.”
Racism and politics are different things homie. A Democrat can be racist or not racist. A Republican can be racist or not racist. An Independent can be racist or not racist. I never said anything about politics. You did. Don’t make this political.
If it’s not race or national origin (or connection to an immigrant in the case of Rupp) that you think makes Mantz squeaky clean but not everyone else, then what is it?
