While he might not match his previous level he might match the times because of the shoes etc. I am a little dubious because it seemed like he had such a hard time, but I don't know enough so I am hopeful.
I'd have to agree that a 1:48 would actually be a decent opener. The 800 is a beast, indeed I believe it's one of the more difficult distances to master and run well. Even with a 1:48 opener, Donavan B. could quickly work his way down under 1:44 as he sharpens. However, staying healthy is the name of the game.
If he can get under 1:44, that sets him up well for building strength and speed into 2026, getting in range to be competitive at the top level.
145 can opener baby let's go. You guys are underestimating this world champs "talent" that was built off hard work starting as a young child where he gained his initial drive and determination. He's still in his prime age and has been working towards his comeback race. He will be in the mix.
I would guess he has time trialed an 800 already or at least a 600 and has some idea of what kind of shape he is in. My guess is these time trials point to at least a 1:46 or he wouldn’t enter a formal race. Whether he does that or not we will see shortly.
I don't have the specifics, but I talked to a person last night (6/4) who is much smarter than me (granted, that's lots of people), and he said that "Brazier has been killing the workouts." He knows.
I think 1:46.x is the over-under for sure. Over 1:47 at PTF, he's not happy. Under 1:47, he's on the right track!

What about for someone that started running 800 at age 23, and has been running for 2 years. Is this my prime or can i drop more time? I went 1:55 my first season and 1:54 the next. Tryna build my mileage up by doing more 1500 races and 1500 type training in order to close faster in the last 200m. Is this futile or am I able to progress more? IDK that much about running primes and stuff
That’s the point I was making, you’d have good reason to believe you’re within a second or so of your maximum potential if you’ve been training consistently under fantastic coaches since you were in high school or earlier, but I think there’s no reason to believe your limit sits around 1:54-1:55. You probably don’t even know what training works best for you yet. Dial in your training over the next couple years and I bet you can get negligibly close to your maximum genetic potential and it’s probably not 1:54
I played football for 10 years that was all the running I did, and i do very low mileage as of right now, on average about 30-40km a week max, about 25km during races. I think with higher mileage and more 1500 style training, i can break 1:50 soon. I think i stopped improving a bit but because my coach doesn't know the type of training i need. I think more miles 50-60km and more longer reps.. Thanks for the advice, will try and go all in on track. you think you can still PR at 30+ years old as in my case, when i started late?
Thanks but i am not lying. I went 1:59 for my first ever 800m race (indoors), then ran 1:56 for my first outdoor race and the next race was 1:54 high, so basically 1:55. My 400m is 51 and 1:21 for 600. Thats what i am working with, with some longer reps and more mileage i think i can run something fast
honestly running sub 1:50 as masters runner is insane tbh
Just going along with this slight tangent to underscore how good Johnny was. He ran 1:45 to WIN Pan Am Games at 39! His WA athlete page progression shows that he has just over 20 years of sub 1:50s, starting with 1:47 in 1980 and then 1:48 in 2001.
Screw it, I'm predicting 1:41. BRAZIER IS BACK BABY!
Dawg after that 1:44 maybe you’re right lol who am I to say he can’t run 1:41 after a 1:44 rust buster (busting off 3 years of no racing and 3 surgeries no less).
