How much of this goes on? Occasionally someone's new PB will raise an eyebrow or two, like they've done nothing in their life to indicate this could ever happen. Sometimes it might just be because they've decided to start training more seriously, but I don't think that always explains it.
It never occurred to me to dope. That would be like using jet fuel in a 1937 Packard with fuel-line problems. I do know guys who became intensely competitive after forty. Something about stepping into a new opportunity to “win” or appear some kind of elite-“for their age” deal?! Tried it a bit, but dropped it when it seemed kind of unnecessary, and mildly pathetic. But I —conveniently!— lost interest in times and got into effortlessness, injury-free status, and living in the moment. Wisdom or just plain laziness? Dont care, made it to 80 before the guy with the long pointy sticky ushered me off the road.
