Rupp. He's not retired. He ran a 2:14 marathon last year.
Yes. I think Rupp is the right answer, but a 2:14 is "retired" for a 2:06 guy with Olympic medals in his house. :)
Rupp is gearing up to compete in the marathon again, I don't believe he is truly done. Overcoming this last injury and giving it one last go with Mike Smith
After taking a year off to rehab from a partially torn ACL, distance star Matt Centrowitz appears in L.A. at Track Fest with goal of returning to Olympics.
Centrowitz had handled past injuries by isolating himself in books or video games. After leaving the world championships last summer, knowing his knee was still weeks away from being cleared for running, Centrowitz did something different, beginning an internship at a Chicago hedge fund, Alyeska.
Heard from one of my buddies in high school who was friends with kids on the team, but Centro apparently coached Anand Parekh’s kids and their high school team. Also the guy centro outkicked was a d3 runner at university of chicago who just graduated and is still training - was about a 3:50 1500 guy in college so not exactly a slouch.

By the way, I love it when pros do super small races. I cracks me up to see them running against schlubs like me. I lost a Holiday 5km to Chris Solinsky one time...
Which gets me to my question. Which retired pro do you think is in the best shape? If we had a "charity event" like the golfers do, who could still put up a pretty good time? Meb? Rupp? Who would you pick?
Absolutely. I don't care if they are old/fat/slow, I still want to see them running (and doing my race paces as warmup). Wonder how much Webb would charge to pace me...

I think the fact that the second place guy is an actually good runner makes it funnier. In 99% of races he’d be far and away the best guy their, but by some ungodly bad luck he ends up on the line next to one of very few living people who can claim they were at one point the best miler on this planet

Obscure sports memory, but reminds me of when just retired MLB player, Eric Byrnes showed up for a rec league slow pitch softball game.

Imagine being pressured by your boss to do some corporate challenge because “you’re one of those runner guys.”
you reluctantly craft some kind of peak, throw in some speed work, your coworkers are cracking jokes about how you’d better win because you’re so skinny
You toe the line and next to you is THE GREATEST TACTICIAN IN HISTORY OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALIST CENTRO.

Pain
Greatest. Tactician. Of all time?
you forgot about Lagat.
centro was good, but lagat was better.
heck even Cole Hocker and Rupp could beat Centro.
Centro in his prime bent races to his will.
You’d wonder “how did he get away with it.” It seemed like luck. It seemed like everyone else screwed up. It seemed like X Y Z runners could beat him easily.
But what seemed and what WAS… well that’s why centro is the best. You’d couldn’t even believe it was happening as you watched it.
this is from 2020, definitely some sort of connection between the families.
Ava Parekh, a junior at Latin School in Chicago, placed third during the Nike Cross Virtual Championship week competition by running a personal-best 16:59.40 on her home 5-kilometer layout Nov. 21 at Lincoln Park. Parekh, who joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to reflect on her impressive fall season, also helped Chicago Latin XC Club place seventh overall with 187 points. She went unbeaten against Illinois competition the entire fall and placed in the top three in every cross country event she contested, including a third-place finish Oct. 15 in the championship race at the XC Town USA Meet of Champions, presented by The Garrett Companies, at the LaVern Gibson course in Terre Haute, Ind. Parekh also captured the Division 2 title Nov. 8 at the ShaZam XC Club Championships at Three Sisters Park. She also ran Nov. 21 with her brother Akili and her parents in a family distance medley relay against the Centrowitz lineup, including Matthew Sr. and Matt. Parekh looks forward to returning to the track to lower her personal bests of 4:51.56 in the mile and 10:30.69 in the 3,200 meters, which she achieved Aug. 1 at the Illinois Meet of Champions
