Either Bates or Joe Boss or someone affiliated with them…is in here downvoting literally anything remotely critical about Bates or her training. Yet the results are the results…people aren’t in here making this up. I’m sure they’ll downvote this too.
She’s been fairly consistent with top 10 or almost top 10 finishes at WMM running in the mid to low 2:20’s. I’d bet she picks up solid appearance fees and gets nice contract bonuses for top 10 finishes / being one of the top US women. Getting media attention definitely helps the sponsor $$$ roll in.
There’s nothing wrong with that, but as a fan it’s definitely more fun to watch Mantz go for broke and try to win.

As long as she’s one of the top Americans, I’m sure she’ll have sponsors. The Business model for Marathoners is different than that for major pro sports. It’s all about moving merch. . Someone like her even though she’s not as good a runner as say Helen Obiri, will probably move more shoes, watches and gels in the US.

Maybe you have a new career as a coach who thrives on creating confident runners with mantras such as, "I can be top 10, maybe top 20," "I can't win, because Fanboy1 says I am mediocre," or "I can tell LetsRun message boards I suck and get all the love I need!"
I swear some of you must have either been born last year or never paid attention to Marathons before. Does no one remember Emma Bates leading Boston in 2023 into Mile 23 and 24? Why does she think she can do it? Because she almost f-ing did 2 years ago, heck I was watching then stunned thinking she may do it too, it was one of the most amazing performances I've seen, and now when she returns to the same course to race 2 of the 4 women she was in that lead pack with, why tf wouldn't she think if she's fitter that she could once again push them to the line?
Shame on you lot for so readily sh*****g on a great American marathoner.
The level of females you guys pull must be really pathetic if you think Bates is super hot or a babe lmaooo. Between the giant nose, the horse teeth and her crazy eyes I really don’t see it. Plus already divorced once and the constant need for attention, woof.

Is this Joe or Emma?
Based on results, 2023 was the exception for her not the norm, it’s the only time she’s gone sub 2:23:59 in a world major. She did go 2:23:18 at worlds in 2022. Meanwhile, podium times have dropped significantly and she hasn’t kept pace, to the point where she’s not a serious contender to podium in world class events. She will struggle to make a US team again as well given the recent performances of other US women. She’s still in the mix but not a clear favorite. There’s no shame in being a 2:23-2:26 marathoner, nobody discounts that. But saying you’re - threat to win at this point or run sub 2:20 is kind of a joke and that’s why we’re all here, with our one brain cell, questioning that decision by her.

Who said she wasn't great? Learn to read. Why did she think she would win? Her coach is delusional.

She was dropped at about 2:09:30 into the race. She had well over 2 miles to go at that point. There were 4 women she was with and she couldn't handle the pace. It's NOT a dis, it's reality.
She couldn't answer the bell in the last round. Look at what the top women do know in the last few miles. They are dropping close to 5 minute flat pace. If you can't get away from there before that happens, you're toast.
She ran well, but she wasn't winning that race as she doesn't have the leg speed to go with that kind of pace late in a marathon. Her 5000 pr is exactly 5 minute pace!

Jesus Christ - I don't have a horse in the race with her, but the people who have used this post to go after her on everything but the kitchen sink and attack her looks are truly why this board's reputation is so trash. Is she someone whose influence is now exceeding her competitive ranking? I'm sure it is - this is why one great performance on a big stage can get you a lot of money in that world. So fine - if you hate her for that and want to revel in her failures while also denigrating the women who beat her as drug cheats, congrats on being so right about what a loser she is. I just don't get why the personal attacks are also in bounds here - looks are in the eye of the beholder and to me, they don't have a place in a discussion about an athlete's performance. Then again, some of you also think it's cool to speculate about the eating disorders and mental health of high school girls, so I guess this is just par for the course.
