I don't think anybody has pointed this out yet, but back when Fred Kerley initially announced that he would be focusing on the 100 meters for the upcoming Olympic cycle, he said that he was doing so in order to improve his basic speed, which he said he needed to do to get the world record in the 400 meters in the future. He said that his goal was to eventually be the first man under 43 seconds.
I wonder if he is actually following this vision. Maybe he is not saying anything publicly as of now to avoid putting too much attention and pressure on himself, as well as to avoid the spotlight while his legal dramas are still fresh. I personally think there is a fairly high chance that he is in fact low key recommitting to the 400 and that his failure to win gold and legal troubles have motivated him to get back to his vision and redeem himself. If this is the case we could be in for something special in the future.
This reminds me of Michael Norman. He should've, could've, and would've been the one to do this. He casually ran 9.86 in his first 100m in four years back in 2020 at some random low key meet with zero audience and like three other racers. Dude could've ran 19.2/42.9 with that kind of speed and won the first Olympic 200/400 double since MJ. Easily one of the most talented sprinters in history, and perhaps the talented ever. He's like the German Fernandez of sprints.
Now, I hope he can get his act together and maybe pull it off at LA28. And to top it off, I'd like to see Kerley take a stab at it, too. That would be one hell of a rivalry. Kerley is getting older too, as he'll be 33 the next OLY games, and with what he's already achieved at 100m, I think a move back up to the 400m is timely.
