I had the chance to attend the pre-meet at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in Boston this year with my son who runs high school track and XC. We met tons of the athletes including Grant Fisher, Hobbs Kessler, Bryce Hoppel, Sinclair Johnson, Jessica Hull, Cam Myers, Rai Benjamin, Marcell Jacobs, Donovan Brazier, Cordell Tinch, and Noah Lyles.
All of them were really happy to get a picture with my kid, especially the distance runners. Grant and Hobbs were the nicest, with both of them interested in chatting with him about his running. Noah was the least interested in stopping for a pic, but he still did. To his credit, he stayed and got pics/ signed autographs for kids for at least 45 minutes after the meet ended the next day, so it's possible we just caught him on a bad evening.
We also caught up with several stars at the NCAA indoor champs in VA Beach last month. I congratulated Ed Eyestone on his team's success as I passed by him after the meet was over and he stopped me and chatted about coaching for several minutes. I was extremely impressed with him.
On a personal note, I coached both Grant Holloway and Quincy Wilson when they were in middle school (I take exactly zero credit for their success). They have different personalities, obviously, but they are a couple of the nicest guys you'd ever meet.
