Yes. This is a good point. The pace for the first 2km was so slow that no lactate was building up at all.
This was well explained in that Breaking 2 movie. When a runner is not producing lactate, they can "hold a pace" until they run out of blood glucose. So in a 3km, there is no problem at all for Jakob at that effort.
It was like a warm up run for him prior to that final 800.
That said, his previous three days have been hard and he has raced three times. That is actually the more impressive feat. Coming back from day after day of racing is so hard.
