I wish I could run a 2:05 marathon and people consider it a bad day. I remember when 2:05 would've been a world record. We're just spoiled now with all the sub 2:03 marathon times we forget that the average joe can't even run a quarter mile at a 5 min mile pace, let alone run 4:40 miles for 26 miles.
You are on the wrong thread. Cheptegei is a world record holder I remind you at 5 and 10. And he is wearing advanced shoes and drinking advanced Maurten hydrogel. And he is 28/29, not 35, 36, 37, or 39. He is professional supposedly, and has the best environment at altitude in Uganda to train.
He barely threatened the 2:06 barrier and positive splitted. At least do a negative split for goodness sake. Even Gault knows that a negative split would have acquitted Cheptegei even in a loss. But he was expected to win too.
Not everyone gets a home run their first time to bat. Paul Tergat marathon debut was a 2:08 in 2001(sure super shoes didn't exist than). It took him a few marathons to get it down and eventually get the record in 2003 in 2:04:55. Also as a reminder from the studies on super shoes everyone is affected by them differently. He maybe a non responder to road super shoes.

Good point I think Gault missed out that cheptegei isn’t responding to supershoes for roads but I find it odd why he responds on the track? Is it because track shoes are spikey? I just think his gut can’t digest fuel on the run, that’s what I think. And his technique is all over the place, not controlled.
2:06 is a not a bad time, but finishing 9th is. And getting beaten by 8 unknow runners makes it even worse.
He’s looking like Mo Farah 2.0 at this. What we don’t know is his mileage. Last time out he was doing like 80-85 mpw which just won’t cut it. But if he was up to 120 mpw and still attaining this it might just not be for him.
What’s clear is that being a 10, 000 legend is neither necessary nor sufficient to be a great marathoner. I guess it doesn’t hurt your chances, but that’s about it. Just not the same physiologic/energy system requirements. It’s a lesson we seem to have to learn over and over and over.

He needs to stay on the track. He is still dominant in the 10000. If he were to win again in Tokoyo this year he would have 5 championship wins and 2 runner ups. That’s a hell of a resume

That’s BS. Even if not the same energy requirements all the previous 5/10 goats were always malleable to the marathon. Especially if you are East African you are guaranteed such malleability due to a host of suitable genetic and other environmental factors of east Africa. Why is cheptegei not as malleable? It’s because east Africa has changed drastically and no longer the one of the 80s and 90s.

Or maybe glycogen depletion is a b*tch?
It’s not that it’s a bitcch. Bekele and geb all had such depletion too but still found energy from the universe to run so much faster. And Bekele is 42 for Christ sake. There is logical explanation for how cheptegei almost half in age is struggling to break 2:06 and positive splitting as the world record holder at the 5/10. Only a plausible bio-scientific explanation exists.

I think you need to chill. It's his second marathon and he ran under 2:06. Calm down.

What did Kipchoge achieve over the 10k in any way comparable to Cheptegei?

Farah finished 3rd in London after going out with the leaders and battling with peak Kipchoge, and then won Chicago. Cheptegei finishing 9th in 2:05.59 after going out in the second pack is pretty dire. His HM isn't especially strong either. It's looking like 10000 was his sweetspot

What about Kiptum? His 10K pr is >> 28 minutes. Sure, he could have run faster, but nothing suggests he’d be competing with Cheptegei on the track.
