These guys are fast, but still could get chic'd. Also they can enter 5k/10ks for $25-30 and come away with $100 prize money, where a true hobby jogger like myself, could maybe squeeze $25 for 3rd place barely running under 17:30

I knew a guy back in 2010 who was struggling to make the OT, couldn't hit 2:19. He had a 4:09 mile personal best

My 2:17 PB set yesterday is now in shambles. Should have turned down that £500 prize money through shame

2:17 is absolutely sub-elite.. lol
Fine. Call it “Elite-Adjacent” then. 2:17 is an incredible marathon time.

2:18-2:22 runners are crazier than 4 hour hobby joggers.
what are these people chasing, or running away from, to run 80+ mile weeks into their 30s or 40s? What is the point of trying to qualify for multiple Olympic trials when you really never have a shot of the Olympic team? Sure it’s impressive a dude with a full time job can rip sub 5:20s for an absurd distance, but really what’s the point and what’s that dude sacrificing time wise with his family, if he has one, and other wise social life.
these runners are usually the most obnoxious in any local scene. I’d rather cheer on the hobby jogger trying to break 4 hours than see and hear someone write a whole story about trying to get to the trials
It's about trying to be the best you can at something.
Incidentally, if someone is running 2:18-2:22 in their 40s, they're pretty exceptional.
Many runners would sacrifice time, money, and relationships for a 2:17!
In these countries you would be national champion with a 2:17….
Luxembourg
Ireland
Norway
Sweden
Denmark
Finland
Hungary
Czech Republic
Slovakia
Slovenia
Smaller Caribbean nations: Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago, Barbados
Smaller Pacific nations: Fiji, Samoa
Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe
It's hobby elite without a hint of sarcasm. Very fast but it's doesn't cut it anymore given at least a couple of minutes are off the bouncy shoes. Sub 2:13 would put US male in sub elite. I think that is the new cut off.
Did the OP choose 2:17 just to diss wejo?

Whh do people like you pretend that Africans aren’t doped to the gills? How’s Ruth btw? 😂🏅
A thread full of absolute losers calling 2:17 guys losers. The epitome of letsrun.

Sweden had 2 men running the marathon in this year's WC and the 8th fastest man in Sweden this year has run 2,17 The Swedish national record is only 19 seconds slower than the American (I don't count Hall's Boston time), but I guess facts don't mean much to you.

Until you've run significantly faster than 2:17 and got nothing to show for it. I can point out a lot of races where running 2:11 or 2:12 gets you a pat on the back. Even at that level you've got to pick the right races to get anywhere. And I can show you a lot of 2:10 guys and even some sub 2:10 guys who don't have contracts and rely on scraps of prize money if they pick the right races. Running is very lucrative at the front, but it drops off quick. No one cares who is 6th place, regardless of how fast you're running. Winning Twin Cities Marathon in 2:15 is more lucrative than getting 9th at Chicago with a 2:09.
Before the bouncy-shoe clown show arrived in town, 2:17 was a respectable time (believe it or not). Now, not even Geb’s 2:03:59 in Berlin doesn’t get a nod anymore. Top 5 marathoner ever and he’s 39th on the list. Replaced by an onslaught of bouncy-shoe zoomer nonsense. Governing body should do the sport a favor and throw out the clock.

Because they are. 😏

2:17 is a respectable time, just about any D1 distance guy who was on scholarship should be able to run that time. For most who are capable, it is not worthwhile to spend the time and effort after college training to run at that level. Which is also respectable.
Laughable thread, I know it's a troll , but I think some people actually believe this after watching too many doped up Africans sweeping up the majors.
You could win Cork, Limerick, Glasgow, Atlanta, Ibiza and run close at Philadelphia...I could list loads more city marathons around the globe , running 2,:17.
Okay Camille Herron.

People that post these types of messages are usually 25 minute 5k guys.
