Dudes in your 50s do you feel old and your good days are over and death is around the corner

Agreed. I am not much over 50, so I am still doing long runs with the group, so that part of my life hasn't changed much (except for the pace!).

And when we can't run, maybe we'll finally cave and ride bikes... though saying that does make me a little sad.

At least we can get together and watch track meets. That is still fun!

my story is that i have been super fit and super ill in these 50 plus years,

with some fire in your gut, and the right programs, i think anyone can make a quantum leap change for the better.

wim hof, dmso, glutathione IV,. creatin, chelators,. Vit D, yoga, aerobics, weights. stress reduction. changes in attitude and latitude, it's infinite. this is a reason to hang out here. and hear about PEDS, training regimes, though with PEDs, Letsrun generally has zero functional ideas.

i set PRs in the 50's for weight lifting and cycling, and body built very nicely with the slim waste, with women dropping phone numbers. etc.

also got super ill twice in recent years, and recovered eventually using hacks with meds. avoided surgery. there has to be a better way. i've been visiting clinics and spa world wide to find better testing and protocols.

this last while took the cake, i was on a full meal deal health protocol. sauna, massage, diet, workout regime with lots of sleep and not boozing too much, and it was working well. blood work was great, vitals not too shabby.

and then got deathly ill suddenly. bed ridden for 6 weeks with a serious lung infection.

so my nutraceuticals, pharmaceutical, health protocols didn't work as a silver bullet. at least not well enough.

you think you really know what you are doing. and bang, humbled and powerless.

looking forward to a cross fit program.

4 months on and 2 months off. you do better with vacations, don't get out of shape quickly with the base.

58 this year and still run and lift weights like I did 44 years ago. Still feel young as an executive in the school system and coaching on the side.

The hardest part of getting old is realising the decline which happens gradually.

My grandfather was born in 1900 and lived till he was 96 so with luck I will be around for a while.

All good at this age and probably much better than you would know.

Age is just a number.

Happy to be 60 rather than 20. Why? The world is undergoing some massive changes and I don’t believe that they are for the better. It’s getting hotter. People are getting angrier. The population is getting collectively dumber and less emotionally mature.

I grew up and got to experience some wonderful things in an era where freedom and mobility existed. Nowadays, we have constantly broken supply chains and a shortage of people with valuable skills. Factor in that AI will obsolete even its own creators within a decade and that the obscenely wealthy ruling class have no desire to share, it’s going to get very ugly and soon.

I shall depart this Earth and my final years will not be too awful thanks to some frugality and, because I grew up and went to college in an affordable era, the ability to save for my retirement. Many of you will owe huge sums at usury rates while desperately seeking work that no longer exists thanks to automation and incredibly smart machines. Do you really think that Musk, Bezos, and their ilk will suddenly create a Star Trek like utopian world where all human needs are met at no charge because technology does all of the heavy lifting?

Enjoy your llama haircuts and your washboard abs! Have fun hurting your livers while hunting for easy sexual prey. Run that time that no one bit you cares about and history will not remember. Hitting 50 this year. I lost motivation in the past two years — life stuff and injuries — but I feel like I can give it one last go. I set a goal of running my marathon age — sub-2:50 at 50 — so we'll see. Three years ago that would have seemed liked a very conservative goal, but now it's going to be a struggle.

I have no motivation to progress at work. I'm not sure how I'm going to make it to retirement, if that's even an option. I work in a field that's skews young, but luckily I can still pass for 30s.

Still married, so "hot chicks" don't concern me. The 50 year guys I see who are back in the game seem pathetic. They get on TRT and think they're 18 again. Nobody needs an agro middle aged dude who thinks he's hot sh!t. Seriously, don't hit on 20 year old women. That's just sad and gross. Work on yourself, and not in the divorced dad, wrap-around Oakleys, JRE, red-pilled kind of way.

Love this post. Times nobody cares about so true. The times are challenging now, more so than when we were 20. At 56 here's my summation:
I broke the school record, ran D1, was sponsored pro triathlete
in late 80’s and 90’s. It was somewhat satisfying, I guess. Nobody cared so much but me.
I have two kids in their late teens, now. Neither of them were as fast as I was, but both of them are FAR better people, more interesting than I was, and have had childhoods I would
have traded for any day.
If you’re still running in your 50’s, my advice is watch out. We build our cardiovascular
system and strength in out late teens to early 30’s. No sense in trying to get
faster after that. After 30’s you should be enjoying that cardiovascular platform you
created in your 20’s and 30’s to get you through your 40’s, 50’s, 60’s.

Because I had a massive cardiovascular history, I sort of dominated sports
and activities I played in my 30’s and 40’s. Ultimate frisbee, whitewater
paddling, and surfing.
But don’t work out in your 40’s and 50’s like you did in your 20’s and 30’s, with extended periods above 150,160 bpm. Your heart can take it, but your arterial system can’t.
If you work out over 140 bpm at this age, you’re cooking your system. The runners that have died “he was in shape, he ran marathons” in their 50’s or had heart attaches was because they cooked their arterial system. Your arteries get brittle after age 40.
Face it. We stop producing collagen after age 35. Your arteries, tendons, cartilage don’t have the same elasticity.
You can go over 140 bpm, but don’t stay there.
The increase in blood pressure that high hear rates have sort of slam the various lipoproteins carrying cholesterol through your system and can embed them in your arterial
walls. You did not have much plaque build up in your 20’s. If you’re over 40,
you do now to some degree.
Age 56- in the past 6 years I frequently sleep in the car in poached slopeside condo
spots, get up at 5 am and skin up to the top of the mountain (125 bpm avg) to
get the fresh track powder run down on the snowboard. I surf big waves and wing
foil at the beach down the street 3-5 times per week. I set a world record in a
1986 video game that NOBODY cares about.
But my kids are my life and I doubt 5 minutes ever go by in a day where I don’t think about them or how proud of their lives and how they live and treat people.
In my 20’s all I thought about was myself and my times (insignificant to everyone but me). I’m still having fun and kicking butt, but people need to come to terms with the fact that at age 40/50 your athletic relevance is OVER.
I had a hard time coming to terms with that as you can probably tell.
If you have kids, raising children that are a better version of yourself is not that hard. We know where we were limited and why. Support their athletics. Do what you need to
do to stay happy by snowboarding and surfing or stuff like that, but don’t blow
their events off to do something you want to do, like a track workout at age 45.
Their athletic relevance is what’s important, not yours.

To each his own, but to me a truck is a truck. People care what I drive, about as much as they care how fast I can run a 5k. I don't care either. When I'm hauling firewood, or picking up some new sections for my pier, I don't really think "does this truck make my butt look fat?"

Live in the present. Fact is, that is where we always are. Embrace it. Eat well, avoid sugar, don't drink too much booze. Run. Follow your heart and embrace community. Embrace altruism; it's ultimately selfish, 'cause it makes your mind and body healthy, scientific fact.

In my mid-60s here, stuff looks good. Just completed the best project yet in my career, and started the next one. Meanwhile, running a Half Marathon in 2 weeks.

The TRT guys no matter what age are complete phonies! I'm 64 & hit the weights pretty hard working out everyday in one form or fashion. I'm a natty guy & have decent muscularity for someone my age not on TRT.

The TRT guys at my gym are so arrogant & narcissistic it's pathetic. They're constantly posing in the mirror & acting like hotsh*t. I call them out all the time as phonies. And it's sickening how some of the natty guys worship the TRT guys. 😖

One older TRT guy at my gym nicknamed by staff members as "Muscle Mike" is an arrogant jerk. I called him out one time challenging him if he could achieve his physique naturally. He told me "Damn right I could! - I just don't have the time in my busy life that it would take to do it." 🤣
