Where did he go to college and what is his training like? How hard did he train in high school? One of my lifetime goals is to break 30 min. in the 10k and being a pretty good runner I want to know how a guy like that has gone on to do it. Please respond.
he's still in college. His trianing in hs was very little (close to 30 mpw), with interval work mainly short intervals like 200s, 300s, and 400s.
Now he runs mainly a lot of stuff at his aerobic threshold. Few intervals. If you want to talk to him e-mail me and I can get you his e-mail address. He could probably give you better info.
Ran 1 year in high school, times:
400m: 51.2
800m: 2:01.5
1600m: 4:44+
College times:
400m: 48.5
800m: 1:49.70
1500m: 3:48.75
Thought I was going to play soccer or basketball in college, but after sitting on the bench for a few weeks, I walked down to the track office, and the coach took me on and trained me well.
I knew a guy who did a 2:08 800, came to college, lied about it and eventually did 2:00 that year. By graduation he was in the low 1:50s, and afterwards I think he broke 1:50.

On a completely different level, I could barely make my HS JV team in XC and could run fast enough to be entered in almost any event on the track. After HS I ran a little then in grad school ran a lot more. I got down to 2:35 for the marathon and got hurt when I was in 2:32 shape (judging by marks at other distances), with similar quality shorter marks; these are not great but I was surprised at being able to run 15-20km faster than my HS 2 miles after missing most of six years. [Note, this was several decades ago and I am male.]
The marathon is 26 miles 385 yards.

Solis just busted a 28:58 10k at the Mt. SAC relays. Coach Vigil knows how to take guys with minimal talent and train them into national caliber runners. Stories like this one are really inspiring for good but not great runners like me. Maybe I should go to Adams State.
What does Coach Vigil have to do with Solis? Coach Vigil hasn't coached at Adams State in over a decade and the gentleman there is doing a great job. Actually the best times run at Adams State have been under Coach Martin. Also Coach Vigil never coached Meb. That was and is Coach Larsen.
I saw Solis win his league x-country race his senior league in the rain. He ran a smart race against a fella who did very well later that year in the state 3200. I hope he continues to do well. I can't remember if Bill Rodgers was such an individual. Can somebody recall?
I ran x country in high school, never placed higher than 28th at state(montana),Did not run Track, couldn't realistically have broke 10 minutes for 2 or 4:40 for 1 mile. Went JUCO, then NCAA D1, eventually ran 3:41 for 1500 and 13:46 for 5000, both Oly trials Qualifiers in 1992. Long story short, if you put your mind to it and dedicate the time and effort, you can and will accomplish many things, including faster times on the track. Good luck and have fun!!
