Would they have beat 2021 Newbury Park head-to-head? No.
But team means more than simply having a pair of talented brothers in your top 5.
Cruz Culpepper hasn't scored for them since Desert Twilight and they still took home a commanding NXN victory over an historically deep field. They've epitomized the next man up mentality -- with a rotating cast of kids stepping up and going toe to toe with nation's best. Look at the kids they had place in the 20's and 30's. These are more or less anonymous runners finishing alongside athletes who were talked about as threats to win the meet individually.
Then they sent their JV team to Runninglane where they took second, averaging 15:41. They could have mixed and matched kids from that squad and still won NXN.
Not sure this type of top-end success paired with this level of depth has been seen since York. Maybe. A team is more than 5 runners and this is the best one I've seen since I started following the sport.
Cruz ≠ Rocco.
Also, the year after Cruz graduated is when the Niwot boys team really started making a name for themselves at the national level.
