Diljeet Taylor is a marvelous coach. Let's see how she manages tamping down freshman year expectations. This isn't a criticism in the least. I would put large odds on this young woman being fabulously successful. But freshman year is an adjustment, even going local to a place like BYU.
Hedengren won the Brooks PR mile in one of the fastest times in history her sophomore year. Did you guys not watch that race?
Very true, but in the hype machine that was the year of Riggs, Baloga and Gorriaran. Shea and Engelhardt were shiny new toys as well.
Also there are so many national track meets now that the focus gets lost. Had Jane followed the mile win up with a fall xc win, she would have had a ton more exposure.
Not down on Hedengren at all, it's definitely not fair the way hype works. She will be in good hands at BYU. Coach Taylor excellent and Hutchins there for practical advice.
The real secret to the high school hype is having a few years of success and being dominant. Hasay, Baxter, Lane, Mu, Whitaker, Willis and Tuohy were all top of mind for 3-4 years. Jane more like Cook, storming thru xc her senior year.
When you think about it, Hedengren won all of Utah State, NXR SW, and NXN by about a minute and set records at each course!
Jane’s last 1k was the fastest in the race. She wasn’t racing anyone and had been pushing from the start, and still ran faster than anyone else at the end. Incredible!
That’s not true at all. The results say first k of 3:13.7 and final k of 3:20.0.
Hopefully she receives -- and accepts -- an invitation to race Foot Locker Nationals next Saturday.
Foot Locker has never given at larges.
NXN gave them a few times to kids who has to choose between FL and NXN. Starliper got one her sr year.
This year NXN chose not to grant. Only CA can't do both now.
Are you sure?
I thought Englehardt turned down an invitation to race in San Diego last year.
I vaguely recall other past invitations as well.
Damn. If only Foot Locker would break CA away from the West Regional, have the top-10 runners in the all-division power merge from the existing CA state meet be the Qs to FL Nationals, then move the West Regional back a week so that all five FL regionals are one week before NXN and two weeks before FL Nationals, then runners from all regions of the country would be able to choose to race their NXR, then their FL regional if they so desired, then one or both of the national meets if they qualify
No, her last 1k was 3:20. Everyone's else last 1k was slower than that.
I don't think that is that unusual for the winner...she was clearly the strongest runner and won "going away". We have seen this before - at least for the final mile before they had all the K splits. 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018
