He ran the 2001 World Marathon Championship, but dropped out. I think he said the pace (race was won in 2:12) was too slow for him, affecting him poorly. I used to wonder why he didn't run quicker..
That said, this was a great effort!!!!! Sensational mark. Sad he never did that much at 5000m and 10000m. Did manage a 3:49.4 indoor mile in Boston.
I’ve never quite got the King Ches age conspiracy theory, since he WAS older for his grade and continually got better speed-wise until 2018 (age 24) on the track. Seems about right, and he’s become a good road racer but not good enough to factor in Kenya.

I saw him at the airport today in Valencia. Maybe he looks older in pictures or on the screen but in person definitely looks like any other 30 year old dude.
Khalid was a fearless beast. He never ducked competition. He took down Tergat and Haile in what at that time was maybe the greatest marathon of all time. He ran several marathons when he was injured and those show on his record. He is the Dan Marino of marathoning. He might not have gotten the Gold but he lit the world on fire during his time.

I really don’t think the age thing is relevant anymore in HS. It’s not relevant in the NCAA, so whether a runner is a few months older because of their birthday shouldn’t matter. It just pearl clutching about HS records…

Cheserek dominated high school, dominated the ncaa (17 time champ) and has run a faster marathon than any American. He also ran 3:49 indoor mile which was #2 ALL TIME at the time.
He wants to be an American citizen and has been trying for like a decade. I'd happily take his story and his personality as a citizen of our country.

"The Dan Marino of marathoning" is a great analogy. Beating Tergat and Geb while setting a world record at London 2002 was his "beating the 1985 Bears" moment.

Actually age matters a great deal up until 24yrs old. Guys are almost always getting faster from 17-22 (different with girls). This discussion has nothing to do with age. Ches was older HS athlete but this is about his recent marathon effort.
Happy to see him run this mark. Too bad he never ran faster than 13:04. He certainly should have. Ritz ran 12:56 and was not nearly as talented or accomplished.

He's king.
Great runner, no doubt. Inarguable. That said, I don't know a single person who expected his track PRs to be 13:04.4 and 27:42.7

He was phenomenal during his days at Oregon.
Ches actually ran 27:23.58 in 2020
10,000 Metres JSerra Catholic HS, San Juan Capistrano, CA (USA) 05 DEC 2020 USA Performance 27:23.58 Score 1189

Do we really know why it's taken this long?
Could he have not joined the Army and WCAP years ago?

He does not want to be in the Army-can't say I blame him. Air Force has a program but it is not as competitive as the Army training group. However, his quality of life in service would be much higher in the Air Force.
