I will definitely tear up listening to the Star-Spangled Banner, but cannot fully understand why. Are the chord changes in these songs designed to provoke emotion? Not to mention the dignified cadence and the use of horns section.
The stupid thing is, I can also easily tear up when listening to another country’s national anthem. If I watch Katarina Witt on the medal stand, blinking back tears to the old East German national anthem, I get a really emotional response as well. Never even been to communist East Germany.
The old drinking song from which the Star-Spangled Banner tune comes, is nothing special, so it can’t only be the chord changes, but the pairing of highly emotional experiences and images?
But yes, the right performance of the Star-Spangled Banner will make me tear up against my better judgment.
Never standing up for the SSB again. A country that freely and fairly elects a r*pist and a felon to be its president doesn't deserve to be respected or honored.
While I share some of that feeling--unavoidable--I would never say never. Its like finding out my favorite uncle (Sam?) was a member of The Klan or a Neo-Nazo. Hes family and has been good to me, reliable and generous. Then this. But hes in my blood and memory as a real rock. His favorite tune and lyrics will always ring true, and I dont think I can ever give up on him. I still owe him and own him and will not give up hope that he will come back to his senses and sing that good song--with all its and his faults--again...in the bye and bye. Not giving up.
