We usually go to CO or NM (or both) for skiing at least twice a year and needed AWD because we do not get snow at home and do not need snow tires. We also go tent camping a lot and need decent trunk space for our gear. The Outback, Honda CRV and Toyota RAV4 are the cheapest AWD vehicles with a decently roomy trunk. RAV4 has a bit more total cargo volume but that is because the trunk space is taller than the Outback. When you put the seats down, the Outback has more space. CRV has wheel bump outs that make it difficult to fit stuff in the trunk. And it is shorter.
I bought a 2020 Outback. I have driven it in some pretty serious winter conditions and it is a rock on the road. It was the first model year with a redesign and new boxer 2.5 liter engine. As with any manufacturer, the first model year of the redesign had some issues. But Subaru is very good about taking care of service issues. I had one mechanical issue that I thought was consequential damage from a recall issue. Even though I was well out of warranty, the dealership agreed to split the bill. Other than routine maintenance, I have not had any other mechanical repairs and am close to 100k miles after five years.
