this has been happening since the 80s, there's just more opportunities for east Africans to come to the states with technology its a lot easier for a coach from a no name school to get in contact and vise versa then in the 80s, but its not a new concept. this might be a crazy concept for someone like you, but someone else's age background, and where they came from doesn't mean you cant form a bond and be part of a team with them, there's probably a lot of life advice your daughter can learn from this transfer since you cant teach the value of different life experiences,
Solomon Kipchoge of Kenya just committed to Texas Tech. He has run 59:37 for the half marathon and is 28 years old. If he was American he would not be eligible, no?
And what about other sports. If a 28 year old wants to try out for football or rowing should they not be allowed if they still have eligibility?
If you haven't started/finished your eligibility clock...
You can be any age and be on a team if you are able to make said team.
There have been several guys who played pro baseball out of high school and came back in their mid 20s to play college football because their clock hadn't started... Chris Weinke and Brandon Weeden were both playing college football at around 28 because they had played baseball. Still others play college sports after serving in the military...
And as far as older Kenyans go?... As somebody mentioned...They've been wrecking shop since the 1970s. In fact, I'd say it was an even bigger problem back then because nobody could touch those UTEP and WSU guys.
This is ridiculous. I have no problem with international athletes running in the NCAA. I think it is great for US athletes to compete against and to have teammates from other countries. 28 year old professional athletes - this is not ok. Unfortunately, the ncaa does not have the courage to stop this.
That's because then they couldn't have the feel good story of the 50 year old guy who ran for a small DIII school.
Division 1 (D1) and Division 2 (D2) colleges require high school student-athletes to enroll in college no later than 12 months post-graduation. Upon acceptance, these students have five years to compete in four full years of college sports, as they can
It's and advantage because he's running against kids like my son who just turned 18 this summer and has only been running since 8th grade. I don't know anything about Solomon - I'm sure he's a great guy and he's smart to take advantage of the system, but I would assume he's had professional coaching and has been running for over a decade. On the other hand kids like my son, were 8 a decade ago and his coach is HS coach was a history teacher
I recommend that your son take 7 gap years, and enter college when he is 25. If he went into the military, the GI Bill would even pay for college.
With the way courts are ruling, restrictions more likely to go away than to be added. College sports will be for anyone enrolled in 12+credits, with no limit on age or number of seasons and years.
Anything else is unfairly putting a cap on someone's earning potential. Any student eligible to compete; so if foreigners can be academic students, they can be athletes.
There need to be age limits for athletes. And no scholarships for foreign athletes. The US university system is not a free Olympic training program for the world. Develop for free in America under American coaches paid for by American taxpayers and then go knock Americans off the podium at the Olympics and World Championships. Nah. Especially when they are taking scholarships from Americans.
The home nations or the athletes themselves can foot the bill for training in American universities.
Who are these foreign athletes coming and getting developed in America, then stealing podium spots from us in WCs/Olympics? Josh Kerr? Geordie Beamish? Where is the uproar over them? Why is it when noname Kenyans start coming over you get upset, but when (white) literal World Champions who got scholarships to compete in the NCAA come over, no one is complaining?
If you want to set a hard cap of 24-26 years old for the NCAA, I'll support it 100%. But quit it with the whining over black foreign athletes (who, btw, aren't winning NCAAs, nor stealing WC/Oly podium spots. Habtom Samuel won the 10k last year because the best Americans didn't run it), if you're not gonna be complaining the same when white foreign athletes do the same thing and are more successful. And besides, Americans have the mile, 3k, 5k, and 10k NCAA records. 3 Americans who grew up in Washington won the last 5 1500/mile titles. BYU won NCAA XC against a bunch of foreign runners with a whole team of kids from Utah.
I am so tired of the crying about black foreign athletes coming into the NCAA, before inevitably US home grown runners win NCAAs anyway. Make a thread when all the foreign athletes in the NCAA combine for the number of titles Cheserek won each year.
How many 26 year old college students do you know? Average age of college senior is 21-22. An additional 4 years of aerobic training is a massive advantage in distance running.
Age restrictions are no different than weight classes in boxing and wrestling
The rules are the rules. Your logic is equivalent to demanding that the 3 point line be eliminated because some teams recruit 3 point shooters. If there is an advantage to recruiting older runners, then coaches should do it..

There is no rule and therein lies the problem. It's like watching a fully bearded pitcher in the Little League World Series.
You need to read the rule. An athkete has a 5 year clock that starts enrollment which can't be more than 12 months after high school graduation. Don't participate in the sport if you don't like the rules. I want them to disqualify everyone with body fat below 10% but they just won't do it.

There is no D1 rule regarding age. Sounds like enjoy seeing a 28 year old semi-pro demolish 18 year old freshmen
Sort of. There is a rule on eligibility and when it starts. Normally.wpuld end 6 years after high school. But your crying is unwarranted. The average age of the winners of all events at outdoor last year was 21.
How does this even make sense for the school? It seems like a massive expense to bring athletes over, house them, give them scholarships, etc., for what? Do quality non-runner students enroll at a school because it was a top-5 cross country school? Do big donors open their checkbooks after an NCAA indoor 3K title? Is there something I'm missing?
