Who is Kevin Beck and what is the issue? Spill the tea!
He stopped updating his site a bit ago but he's a former RW writer who's got lots of vitriol for a lot of people, and Roche is one of his main targets.
Also, looks like Roche won! KEVIN BECK GOES HOME DEVASTA- oh wait, Beck doesn't really leave the house much nowadays, so I guess it's KEVIN BECK STAYS HOME DEVASTATED
Hats off to Roche. Must admit, I thought only a Walmsley or Jornet was taking that record down. Helluva performance by him.
Be sure to let us know next time you run 9:16/mile pace for 💯 miles at >10k elevation, with >15,000' elevation gain over a >12,600' pass (twice). So easy practically anyone could do it!
15 h 26m for David Roche, a new record. For what it’s worth, he looked super strong when I saw him at the last split, at mile 87. Adrian Macdonald looked spent.
What was the old course record? How many minutes did he break it by? One of the best Ultrarunning performances of 2024, I think.
Old record was 15:45 IIRC and hadn’t even been sniffed for a while. This is a really incredible performance, and it was hot in Leadville yesterday too.
On another note, Matt Choi finished in 24:49. Would love to see his Strava… passed 30 people after twin lakes which is pretty shocking for someone who trains as little as he does…
Megan, you are everything to me. Teddy was a superhero for 38 miles. Leo, Mom, and Dad were rockstars. Thank you to everyone for believing in me 🧡 | Strava
Hello, this is 2021 calling. Saucony released their first carbon plate trail shoe (Endorphin Trail) that year which I got. It was better than no carbon but still a little rough around the edges, and so in '22 they replaced it with the Endorphin Edge, which I also got and still race in. Meanwhile, Hoka, Adidas and Nike to name a few have also jumped in the game and Walmsley has worn new prototype Hokas at UTMB last year, then newer proto's at Western States this year. and likely even newer proto's at UTMB in a couple weeks.
While trail super shoes are still a bit behind the development curve compared to their road counterparts, they're still making a huge impact in the game and will continue to do so going forward.
You don't have to say "going forward" when you just said something will "continue to do so." That's redundant.
This was like the Mount Everest of Ultra records. There's a section in Born to Run about Carpenter, and he went as far as filing off parts of his shoes to reduce weight iirc. Just think, Bekele set his track records in 2004/2005 and they were broken in 2020. So Carpenter's record stood for even longer than that. Very cool.

Carpenter was actually not much of an ultra runner. He did Leadville at the end of his career and mostly because he got tired of everyone asking him about it. 100 miles was pretty far out of his range. While a solid record, his Leadville time was not the Mount Everest of ultra records.
Roche posted his pre-race plan spreadsheet on twitter... and he projected his finish time within 26 seconds. That is incredible, but especially for a first-time 100-miler.
Congratulations to David. I doubt many on LRC realize the difficulty and accomplishment of this record being broken.
When I heard his name mentioned of being ahead of record pace the first thing that came to mind was, “Is that the same guy that coaches Allie O?” He seems to be very positive in her videos. Didn’t realize he was at such a high level in ultra racing. The Brojos need to have him on the podcast, because this is certainly an impressive race performance.

Your description seems inaccurate, based off Matt's own recap. He seemed to be highly motivated for his attempt and it was years in the making. Highly recommend reading this
