Is it a DQ if one no heights or false starts in the Hep/Dec? If one continues to compete, do the points count?
No. The only way you are eliminated from the competition is if you do not make an attempt in a throwing/jumping event or do not start a running event. She is still competing but with zero chance of a medal due to zero points in the HJ. Three guys no heighted in the pole vault during the decathlon and two of them did the javelin and ran the 1500. The third one chose to withdraw.
Was she a medal threat? It seems like probably not, so who cares in the end? Just have a good time, you're at the Olympics for crying out loud. Take it all in. Probably the best thing that could happen. Enjoy the ride.
What is the disadvantage of starting at a lower height? Why not always start low?
Conserve energy, the pole vault can take a lot out of you. Requires sprinting and body strength when planting and jumping. I do agree, it doesn’t make a ton of sense to me since you can lock in a baseline and then just skip the next heights until you get to your desired “easy height”. Warner made the same mistake in the men’s decathlon, started at 4.6m despite having a lifetime personal best of 4.95m set a decade ago when he was 24 and now is almost 35; subsequently he ended up no heighting and his strong chances of medalling were gone.

She is 1231 behind after 4 events, so, no never a chance even if she recorded an early high jump

Warner recorded a 4.90 just last summer, though. And in 2022.
She no-heighted after trying to open at 1.71 unsuccessfully
My question, how did she possibly think that was a good idea at the Olympics?!
Her marks in competition for HJ this season are as follows:
1.76 DNS 1.70 1.72 1.79
I feel for her, especially seeing how distraught she was trying to process getting 0 points, but what in the world was she thinking opening up at a height so close to her absolute best? A height she didn't clear in one competition this season and barely cleared in another. Who is coaching her?
Absolutely zero reason to no height in the multis unless you get injured while attempting a jump.

Inexcusable and plain stupid
Has she made a statement yet about exactly what happened? In that clip of her with her coach, it seemed like her coach was explaining the scoring to her. She seemed like she wasn't sure how her NH would be scored until she talked to her coach.
Not understanding the scoring seems unlikely, but that doesn't explain how she reacted when she talked to her coach.
She looked MUCH better today. She was smiling and happy most of the times I saw her. After the 800m, she went up to Vidts and I could see her mouth, "Are you serious?" I guess Vidts told her she got the bronze (she was in 4th entering the 800m). Hawkins immediately gave her a huge congratulatory hug. She really seemed to be enjoying herself. I'm glad she decided to continue and not withdraw. She would have looked back and regretted it one day. At age 33, she might not be around for the 2028 Games so this may have been her only one. Wouldn't want "DNF" beside her name in the results of her only Olympics.
Could you elaborate on Shelia Burrell & her coaching rep - she's a very successful/experienced former 2x Olympic American heptathlete.
Her & Chari seem close but as coach, she completely failed Chari at her career Olympic peak. The 1.71m open start decision was mind-bogglingly inexcusable for a coach & the results were devastating - especially egregious when Chari's very visibly anxious/stressed from her 1st attempt (she's been open about suffering from heavy anxiety).
Both have been around the block - Chari's been attempting to become an Olympian since 2016 (15th Trials), Tokyo 2020 (injured), Paris 2024 (2nd Trials) - amazing determination/progression at 33 but unfortunately, more than likely, her one & only.
It's unbelievable that Burrell would advise so poorly - not to get easy warm-up reps, gain confidence, & points on the board.
Less than 10% Olympians medal - possible medal threat is irrelevant - all just want a chance to do their very best at their career pinnacle.
