nobody runs for PR's in the Olympics, they run for medals. He hung with the best in the world after they took it out at a sub-27 pace. was right there with 400 to go. he's never raced in a stadium like that nor race like that (maybe The Ten but that was more of a time trial)
He was 12th in a global championship like 6 years proor to his theoretical prime. You're probably not even 12th best in your family at anything.
27 is not 10k prime.
Different from everyone obviously and it isn't a one year prime for most people. but if you look at the all-time list for the event, the top athletes' PRs fall on either side of that age, some exactly on it. It's mid to late 20s for the majority of these dudes.
I viewed 25 as 10k prime as 24-25 is most record holders ages. But Farah dominated even at 32. Regardless he’ll be in it in 2028 if /when he makes the team.
Young looked like he was dying the last 2K, but man, he hung of like a beast for a helluva long time. Contender in 2028?
He looked like he was dying for the last 9.6k.
I've never changed my opinion so much on an athlete. I thought he was overrated, a typical LRC messageboard over-hyped NCAA guy. But that was one of the bravest runs I've seen, in context. First Olympics, hardest pace we've ever seen, a deep field, and he's still hanging with them until 250 to go. So much respect for that and for Young. I hope he gets a medal one day.
Whatever someone thinks about Nico, they can't deny he is a gutsy runner. After all, this was the SoCal kid that broke from the pack early to run solo on that cold, rainy day at NXN.
He should be a fixture in American distance running for the next decade.
oh my gosh. i felt so uncomfortable watching nico run that. it was very obvious that all he could do is survive until the other runners start kicking. he still ran a very fast time though
Just have to remember he's still really young. Sub-27 in the GD Olympic Final at 21! I hope you guys like American Olympic medals in distance events, because Nico will bring them home in the future. American distance running shone bright tonight.

Kid ran his balls off. Fisher did too. Proud of those guys.
His NXN race was the first race I ever watched live. It's been crazy seeing him progress to the point he's at now. He's a year older than me and it's inspiring to know that he's my age and running so fast. Really makes me think that I could run that fast if I just tried harder.
You never know when you can trip over your dog and have a career ending injury, so even if this is the best race he ever runs, we should recognize how great it is to run 26:58 in the Olympic final as a college senior.
How sorry is American long distance running that you are praising someone who took 12th place.
Will you praise all the other American track athletes who place 12th or worse? Of course not, so stop praising 12th place. SMH....it is this attitude that explains why we suck historically at long distance.

He just turned 21, you moron. One of the best distance talents in f-ing history. He is literally Kejelcha at a minimum, and he's white, Californian, and openly gay. Kid f-ing runs his balls off. He may be our "great white hope," but he is potentially the USA GOAT.
He didn’t even PR, not that great of a race for him
I think many people didn't PR. The race was about tactics and not so much about speed. The Ethiopians were totally manipulating the race and purposely slowing down, boxing people in, taking turns surging then slowing to push people off their rhythms. That race was pretty rough with all the games the Ethiopians played.
I happen to be in GB right now and watched the BBC feed. In fact it was delayed since they didn't have anyone in the race. The commentator was very complimentary of Nico as to fact he was so gassed but still hanging in there with a lap to go.
