I use a heart rate monitor and my heart rate is often higher when cycling vs running. A 5mi run ave hr 130 ish at 8min per mi and a 20mi ride at 19-21mph and ave heart rate135-145. Cycling would take me 60min and running about 40min. However, it I wanted to be a better runner, I'd run more even though I can get the same cardio cycling.
I am not trying to bash Emma Coburn here…but really want to hear other people’s thoughts.
Does anyone else think her copious hours of biking is a little out of hand? Seems like exercise addiction to me. Maybe it’s her way of coping with the loss of her mom, failed Tokyo Olympic medal attempt, and missed Paris Olympics redemption? What y’all think??
*again, not trying to bash her on here*
Posters who make bold claims like this without providing a link should be banned.
Where is the "bold claim"?
Re-read the post. "Does anyone else think her copious hours of biking is a little out of hand?"
It's an opinion, asking for other opinions.
Clearly, most poster/repliers do not think the biking is excessive.
I think also what people have to realize is that she is in a rush to get back to competing. She is going to age out of being competitive sooner rather than later, so she went all in on cross training. She stated she was hoping to get back to racing this summer. If this happened earlier in her career she might have taken the summer off to recover. I think everyone is looking into this too much. Props to her for this level of dedication after having a really rough past 2 years personally and athletically. Bad@ss!
Unless it's over about 30hrs on the bike a week it can't be quantified ass ridiculous.
Not even joking.
i am not trying to bash runners here, but they really have no clue how little time it takes to train enough (about 12 hours a week) to discover their true potential compared to the non-impact endurance sports like swimming, cycling, rowing, xc-skiing etc. (about 30 hours a week)
PRinceton girl, as a princeton man, let me give you a friendly reminder. Please cite your work. IF you refer to something, particularly something the average person has no idea what you are talking about, please summarize or cite your source.
Professional bikers bike A LOT.
In defense of Princeton girl, per Emma's instagram (reels in particular, which vanish), there is something weird about her current excessive training. Yes, that is a vague statement.
Also, wasn't aware that Lets Run forums are academic-level discussions where all posts must have full bibliographical citations and be peer reviewed before hitting send.
rojo's right. I want to get upset about this but I need more information to motivate me.

Rojo going to bat for an attractive white blond American is the most on brand thing he'll do this decade. (see Shelbo800 for reference)
Learn to read. He didn't "go to bat" for Coburn. He asked the poster to site his source. You are a moron.
Besides there being zero validated info in this thread, the OP sounds like they're training 30-40 years ago. Cross training may indeed be a key that unlocks more capability. Multiple world champion speed skater Bart Swings is a very fast and capable road cyclist, training on all types of terrain including altitude. And if I'm not mistaken, isn't here an American woman, Valby or something, that does a lot her training by not even running LOL?

I seem to be one of the few that agrees with the OP, so I'll try to explain:
It's not that as a pro runner Coburn shouldn't train hard or X train, or ride a bike or row or lift weights.
It's that when looking at her instagram posts and reels since her ankle break, *my impression* is that there is a manic increase in her cardio work and excercise in general. This is my non-scientific personal sense, not a validatable fact or claim. Look at her posts and see what you think. I could be totally wrong.
To me, she seems to be training with a desperation that may be dangerous or excessive, particularly since she has a year until the trials for Tokyo. Two or so weeks out surgery and she's on a bike in a sauna suit (in a reel now vanished): that to me is about calorie-burn, not training for a steeple next spring.
Maybe take 2 weeks off and rest? She had a hamstring injury followed by a broken ankle going over a water jump. Just give your body a moment?
I say all this as a long-time Emma fan, and just want her to get out of this injury cycle!
We are only criticizing the lack of ANY useful information. If you say, "wow, that guy's mileage is crazy!" but don't list the number, we can't really participate or comment in an informed way.
I don't even need a real source (since I like to think the OP wouldn't lie about something like this; though with a source is better), but I at least need to know what the OP is talking about. Just add in, "She's biking 5 times a week, three hours per session..." or whatever it is.
On her IG, it looks like she pedals while binge watching shows and movies on streaming services. My kid does two three-hour spin bike rides each week while watching "The Eras Tour" for the umpteenth time or catching up on "Bridgerton". Should I get her into an in-patient eating disorders clinic, pearl clutchers of Let's Run?

Why didn't the OP just tell us?
That's fair. I agree, more specific info would have helped.

No, your kid doesn't need an in-patient clinic for 6 hours of exercise per week.

These types of posts make me laugh. Like when someone says “not trying to offend” and then goes right ahead and says something offensive
