In the late '90s, I used to work second shift at my tech job. My running and sleeping hours were all over the place, and I've started runs at each hour of the day/night. My most common runs then were 11-14 milers on the trails, which I often did without a light/headlamp because headlamps sucked back then, and I'd run suburban neighborhood roads about 2 miles to/from the trailheads to link up 6-9 miles on the trails. I'd not see much traffic and never any police on those roads.
Other nights, I'd run on the bigger roads in the suburbs, and see more cars. On several occasions, I was harassed by kids. . . a van driving by with the sliding door open, and someone throwing stuff (eggs? water? don't remember anymore) at me. I also was once followed by what probably was a police helicopter at night while I was running on a paved multiuse trail along a creek, but they didn't ask me to stop.
