My question is what finally changed puma’s mind to sign this guy that they hadn’t already seen previously?
Scenario 1: they wanted to sign him earlier but he wanted to make the final as leverage for more $
Scenario 2: the $ is small, and the announcers play along giving 1-3 ads for Puma during 800m introductions that are longer than "Haskom signed with adidas". This is much cheaper than a commercial.
I suspect they were in conversations, and Puma recognized that the media and announcer attention during the 1500m would continue in the 800m and they decided to capitalize on that story.
where are you guys getting these numbers and time periods from? People are not getting paid that much. My guess is a year at maybe 20 grand. These companies don't have that kind of money to throw around.
I know 3 pro runners. None have been Olympians. None have run in the world championships.
I know what they make, you'd be surprised.
But they also get money from bonus situations - place and time from their "club", as well as prize and time bonus money from races.

Ok, how much do they make as a base salary and what are the bonuses?
^--- should work if you have peacock & are logged in (but let me know if it doesn't)
& same thing for men's 5,000m later in the evening (men's 800m heats are on peacock before the tv window, then the tv window, then men's 5,000m heats are back on peacock later in the evening):
Haven't had a pair of Puma shoes since my middle school gym shoes but might have to get some in honor of Eric Holt.
If they brough back the Harambee's with a carbon plate and super foam I would 100% buy them. In my opinion those were hands down the best track spike in the 2000s
Yeah, but he spent most of that interview saying that he had so much "self-doubt" and so many "insecurities" that he needed the approval of his coaches in order to succeed.
That's literally what he says:
"I'm the type of runner that needs a coach to believe in me as much as I believe in myself. I don't I don't want to blame Binghamton, it wasn’t entirely their fault, but..."
He even says that it was his coaches who turned his career around:
"The first thing I asked Trautman and Nohilly was ‘what do you guys think I could run?” And Trautman was like ‘I don’t know, 3:52?’ And that's all I needed..."
The saddest part of that interview that Holt never got that his problem wasn't that other people didn't believe in him -- his problem was that he let other people define him.
I don't see anything that suggests he has fixed that basic problem.
That made me like him even more. Like he was a former state champ who graduated college and life just wasn't working out the way he planned. He had a degree and years of running but it didn't seem to matter. It was something he cared about and he found a coach who built him up and took him to reach his high ambitions. He was a dude feeling lost in his mid 20s and he found a great mentor who really helped he find a path to success that he just couldn't do alone. I don't think Holt was letting other people "define him," he just didn't have a concrete success or plan to point to to justify his believes to other people. That can definitely wear on you if you're talking to old friends, family, or coaches/teachers when you have ambitions but all you have to show for it is a busboy job and a strava full of 5 mile runs at 6 min pace.
TLDR: I found this interview really relatable and rereading it knowing Eric got his contract was very personally satisfying and made me really happy for him.
Can you run within 2 minutes inside his time for a 1500m (3:34)? Can you run 1:45 for 800m? Go home keyboard warrior...never dog an elite athlete which Holt clearly is.

Even with his abysmal social media presence, the larger media seems to have jumped on him as an easy feel good side story to fill time during a race. Like during the 1500m trials I think he got name dropped a couple times even though he was never close to the front of the finals.
Puma gets some good publicity for what amounts to pocket change compared to buying commercial time on NBC or Peacock.
And for at least another year or two (or more), he's actually a threat to win races as shown in NYC Grand Prix and the last year or so of races. Like he really has become a good results runner 2023-2024 despite his age.

Ok, don't need names but how much and how long ago?
Also, can you please tell the story of how younger women swoon over you?
