Zealand's was a shock because nobody saw it coming including herself. I mean a 6 second PR and a national record? I didnt consider that she might break the record until she was literally a few meters from the finish and realized the clock was still in the 4:20s. and then my first reaction was confusion. just like her. those first few seconds after she saw her time she had that "there must be some mistake" look on her face. what a run.
This is actually the norm, as Touhy's national record 4:33 was an 8 second pr and Wiley's 4:28 was a 10 second pr. (Surprisingly, the record was Touhy's only sub 4:40 HS mile, and Wiley only ran sub 4:40 twice)
Zealand's record sadly only lasted about as long as the current 5000 record.
