I have heard that the North East is NOTORIOUS for great Prep Schools. I mom has a friend who lives in CA, and sends there kid to a school NE. Im not sure which ones are good, but the best I hear are in New England...
Choate.
I have know idea what the coach is doing to turn out such consistently strong teams, but the XC record speaks for itself.
Coach Smalls wanted me to run for his Taft team in the mid-eighties. A very nice guy and good coach. For some reason, I chose Choate and Coach Mark Tuttle (who was at the end of his career, like Smalls). Nobody beat us for two years. An aberration, rather than a trend, as the team went back to being just okay until they hired a new coach. He created something of a dynasty.
To the original poster: How is your decision coming along?
Blair Academy in NJ- Marty Miller is a great coach. Turned out several DI runners. Great environment with a tough cc course on campus (hilly golf course).
I wanted to see if anyone had anything else to say on this thread, but I will not resign myself to the single-word post "bump."
I ran XC under John Small in the early 70's. What an epic experience. One of those coaches that you can never forget.
Hey, I know this is 12 years later, but is this Spike S. fromTaft, class of '72?

"The XC record speaks for itself?" This is disingenuous. Phillips Exeter has easily been the most consistently strong program recently - those of you mentioning St Paul's or NMH from the Frank Shorter era, how is this applicable to a current student? Loomis Chaffee and Phillips Andover are also consistently strong, but Exeter has won half of the titles in the last 14 years, it's hard to argue with that. Loomis has a sophomore kid who just ran 8:35 for 3k, and both PEA and PA have sophomores under 4:20 in the mile. PEA has a handful of very strong preps (freshman) as well.
Just have them move you into an apartment in Flag - and enroll you in HS in Flagstaff. Then, ditch the HS team, and just start training with the local clubs. You will be so much better off (as long as you are a 5K+ runner). Just drop a fast 5K on the roads or on the track at some point soon, and college coaches will drool.
I ran with those guys. “Kiwi” Parish, Alan Black, and John Reed. I forgot “Wheels”’s real name. Of these four Alan Black was the most gifted natural athlete. John Reed was was very short and used to foam at the mouth when he ran. Kiwi excelled because he worked really really hard. We all “died” at practice, Kiwi just died a little harder than everyone else. He was also the team captain.
