In 2012, BMC Public Health reported the following average weights by region. The averages were calculated using data from 2005, and relied on combined statistics for men and women: North America: 177.9 pounds Oceania, including Australia: 163.4 pounds Europe: 156.1 pounds Latin America/Caribbean: 149.7 pounds Africa: 133.8 pounds Asia: 127.2 pounds
The numbers are not as bad as they look. That is mean and distribution is not normal distribution. A small number of 1000 pound U.S. men and a small number of 600 pound U.S. women mess up the stats.
A small number doesn't account for that disparity. The nation has a population of 330 million people. By small here statistically speeking you'd still be talking about 10's, if not hundreds of thousands of people over 500 pounds.
I easily see people who are by my estimate at least 400 pounds when going out. I think we're just so accustomed to seeing LARGE people that we think a guy who is 250 pounds is actually under 100. We don't have a good perception of just how big people truly are because we see so many big people everyday. Our bias is skewed toward thinking those big people are "normal", i.e. around 200 pounds when in fact they're more like 250to 300.
Not to mention that we're taller on average which further helps distribute the fat. a 6'3 300 pound guy might look like Joe Typical but 300 pounds is HEAVY.
Your world is so crazy it is surprising you've survived long enough to type out that drivel.
If more kids threw out their lunches, then they got a bit fitter. Other countries manage to give their children healthy school lunches. You have to get buy-in from the whole community. Republicans have done everything they could to make our whole society as obese as Southerners by subsidizing "corn sugar," opposing public transportation, opposing healthy food in school, opposing public athletic facilities and parks, subsidizing cars, oil, and roads, subsidizing fast food restaurants, and opposing sports and PE funding for schools.
Why do you think we need the government to keep us from being obese? Americans love excess, plenty of fat rich people here that know better and can afford expensive, healthy food
You can eat healthy on a budget. I’m in my 40s and have never weighed more than 165lbs at 6’1”. Anyone can go for a run and do body weight exercises. I don’t eat that healthfully, but I don’t eat a huge amount of calories and I run a fair amount.
If we cut out sugar and alcohol in our drinks, our number would drop significantly, especially in young people.

Actually, you're dead wrong if you think the government isn't partly to blame for the problem. Think about which industries the government subsidizes more (corn and sugar). This in turn allows affordable mass manufacturing of cheap products rich in said ingredients. Note affordable. So we establish now that lower income people are more likely to over-consume those ingredients. So you now have a population of people developing metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance, on the path to Type 2 diabetes and other disorders influenced by insulin insensitivity.
Insulin insensitivity eventually leads to over-production of insulin and promotion of fat storage, thus making it harder to lose weight. The children suffer the most as they have less control over dietary decisions made by their parents.
If the government subsidized healthier food industries more, then those healthier options would be more affordable and accessible to the average American family.
Additionally there are other areas where the government has overwhelming control. School lunches are set by the government and based on the food pyramid...which we now know is wrong because of it's over-emphasis on carbs and grains and tiny emphasis on healthy fats, meat and oil. So we have millions of kids on public school lunch programs being ruined for 12 years of consumption of school lunches.
And let's not forget the prison system. The prison system nutrition plans are also developed by the government.
Oh and I can go on. Lax regulations by the government means the industry can use obesity-promoting artificial additives and plastics. Science has shown that there are chemicals in our environment that we can't avoid that have an impact on cell metabolism. The problem in America is multi-faceted simply put.
These stats are insane! Apparently the US is on pace to have roughly half of the population be obese or overweight by 2030. Which is seriously scary. And apparently less than 1/4 of people in the US are considered to be "in shape" - us serious runners are but a wee little percentage point of the population at this rate. Lol. The laziness in this country is on another planet.
Pretty much same muscle mass, just excess weight in the form of fat. If you ever did any sort of combat sport like wrestling, judo or boxing you'd know some dude that's 150 ibs of solid muscle will beat some fat 200 pounder 9 times out of ten.
Most 150lb guys aren't "solid muscle", not even close. You ever get a chance to move heavy stuff with a really fat guy who doesn't even lift? Fat guys are STRONG from carrying all that weight every day. Not healthy, but amazingly strong. I used to know a 350lb guy who would casually pick up a full size refrigerator and carry it.

Are you kidding me? 70% of US adults are ALREADY overweight. I think you mean 50% obese by 2030. And yes, it's terrifying.
I think our food environment is so toxic. I'm naturally thin, have been my whole life, but I have to fight to maintain a healthy weight. You walk into the grocery store and there's hundreds of thousands of affordable extremely tasty foods filled with sugar and fat. My kids are plied with junk food at school and at birthday parties. And there's unhealthy food masquerading as healthy - I'm constantly battling my husband over letting my kids eat too much sugary yogurt.
My wife is around 170, but a good 70 pounds of that are in her rear and boobs. She's actually quite slender overall.
whatever you need to tell yourself to sleep at night. 170 is morbidly obese and you need to put her on a proper diet before she gets hardened arteries and racks up some serious medical debt in her late 30s/early 40s. as a vascular surgeon i've seen it happen.
I think it's ok because much of the weight is silicone and not fat

this. I've been living in various countries in europe and latin america for years now and every time I go back to the states I'm amazed/appalled at how huge almost everyone is. the status quo is extremely warped
