Any news on Australian marathon teams for Paris?

If ability to perform on a hilly course was a factor, then why wasn't proven ability to race well in championship marathons also a consideration?

The best think about Jess is her ability to cross train to good championship performances with stress fractures after mediocre Didyk coaching.

The best thing about Lisa, is we know her coach is great, and she can actually do run training to prepare for her 42.195km running race

Duver is not racing as she is focussing on the Paris marathon. Whether or not that goes against her due to being rusty or the selection committee think she is in prime condition I don’t know. I would go with athletes who have more recent racing done. Jess, Lisa and Gen. but how can you leave the fastest marathoner within the qualifying window off your team?? I think it will be Jess, sinead and Gen.

To my mind, the only justifiable use of subjectivity in selection should be reserved for situations where fewer than 3 have achieved the qualifying time, (ie applied only to athletes who have narrowly failed to qualify by right, in order to send a full complement to the games). In this situation - with >3 running qualifying times - the only sensible approach is to remove subjectivity entirely and apply a strict and objective interpretation of the qualifying criteria … to do otherwise invites accusations of favoritism, corruption etc. In that context, having a baby is no more relevant than another being injured, the course being hilly or conditions being hot. Once qualified on time (within the window), the only objective factors to be considered are (1) time, and (2) number of qualifying times. And if for some reason a tie breaker is needed, the only result of significance should be the world championship results.
Right or wrong, AA set the qualifying criteria. Now they need to apply them fairly and objectively. Anything else doesn’t bear scrutiny and undermines the achievements (and trust) of athletes who have qualified and deserve their place on the team.
Jess has not run a fast enough time hence should not be on the team - plain and simple.

I mean... Jess did win the Comm Games in Birmingham (a championship race, on a hilly course), in addition to her previous 2 Comm Games marathon medals. She was also 22nd in Rio.

I'm assuming you're arguing in favour of Lisa based on her World's performance - and I don't disagree. For me Lisa should have been on the team with Jess and Gen. I think Sinead is incredible, but she's 47 and hasn't done a serious marathon in 16 months.

Just sayin', Rio was almost 8 years ago!

Bumping this again.... rumours Aths Aust was going to release the teams a few days ago. Silence. Anyone heard any news?

Social media perhaps tells a story- we have Jess lying low and not posting on Strava at the moment. Sinead and Gen have Insta-posted some workouts- 'proving fitness' ? Lisa a few insta posts about honesty and fairness. Lisa's coach on twitter stating he's looking forward to seeing Lisa's selection any day now.

There's going to be such a s&%t fight when it's out. Gotta feel for all the women. AA's selection policy will hopefully be updated so this doesn't happen again.

Probably haven't released due to appeals. Lisa posted her most recent workout of k repeats on Social media. Stressful period for these ladies as someone will be miss out. Curious as to who the selectors will pick.

the fight is probably already happening behind closed doors (where it should be) which is why we have the delay.

I'd love to see a trials race for 2 spots, and a third spot given to the person with the fastest time. So if someone is sick for trials etc and they have blinder somewhere else we can still pick them. I think Japan does something like this.

And given the Olympic marathon is almost never going to be cold and flat then have the trial somewhere like Sydney.

While I can see merit in the concept, a trial for marathon places would be problematic, not least because the marathon is so demanding an event, with significant preparation and recovery etc (there are more than enough races within the qualifying window to run a time and show form … we need our athletes at their peak for Paris!).

AA probably didn’t anticipate a scenario where more than 3 athletes would qualify, but it really doesn’t matter … they don't need new qualifying criteria, all they need is a group of selectors who can select a team fairly and objectively, without favoritism or bias.

Whether selections have been objective or not remains to be seen, (but the fact there has been an appeal strongly suggests they have not).

Athletes are training their butts off and competing to earn a place - on merit - in accordance with the qualifying criteria. If they can’t trust the selectors to ratify their results by selecting the 3 most deserving - and have to appeal to the tribunal to get a fair hearing - there is something fundamentally wrong.

Sinead Diver is racing a half Marathon in 6 days time in Tasmania. This race is to prove her fitness. The team selection will be announced after this half marathon. We have at least a week to wait.

Wow that is putting the pressure on her but I am curious if she has even raced since the 2022 Valencia. So what does she have to run in Tassie? Which I assume is where she is going. She ran around 1:11 a few years ago. It would be great to line all of them with the standard there as this would let the selectors know who is in form. But not practical of course.

USA is the clearest selection method. First 3 in the trial with a qualifying time gets in the team. No cloak and dagger. Done. I've got no axe to grind with Diver but she hasn't raced for a long time and a half is going to prove something? Nonsense - unless the Paris marathon shrinks by 21.1k.
