There’s nothing wrong with NC State, and it is better than everything you listed there, except for probably CU. CU is a pretty good school, especially in certain disciplines.
Having said that, if my kid could get either academic and/or athletic and/or financial aid and wanted to stay in the Carolinas, I’d choose Duke, UNC, Wake Forest, Davidson, or even Furman before NC State.
Average ACT scores and admittance rates are not indicative of the academic quality of a school but do give a bit of insight as to the admitted students.
For perspective, NC State has ACT scores at the 25th percentile of 27 and at the 75th percentile at 32. Colorado, meanwhile, is at 25 & 31. On that basis they're relatively close. Admittance rates are at 47% for NC State & 80% for Colorado.
NC State is a good school and probably a better school than that attended by many here that fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way.
