Notwithstanding the actual rules, I have seen this happen at 'every' level without a DQ. About 1/4 of the U.S. delegation for these events are non-runners; it's inexcusable for these detailed not to be managed.

This whole thread is cap! I have seen this DQ happen, and it only seems to happen at major meets. The significance and problem are in the FACT that this is solely an WA/IAAF, which means we are asking a lot of athletes to unlearn habits on the spot. At almost every level you slide down according to order as it changes. This was natural to avoid crossover at exchanges where avoidable. Well the international body disagrees. They use the arbitrary 200 mark before all the racing starts, which has resulted in dq's as runners habitual slide down as their teammate passes through the crowd.

And you can know the rules all day, it is not what you are worried about on third and fourth leg, nor should you be.

Was this meet a qualifier for the Olympics? Does the US men's 4X4 team still get to race in Paris, despite this fiasco?

There are over 210 countries that are members of World Athletics and follow their rule book. It appears that the US has a problem more the others.

It was the same rule when I raced the event in the 70s.

It's just ignorance on the part of the athlete. It just shows that a coach needs to ascertain the level of understanding of their athlete.
