I also wonder if some 5K runners switch to steeple hoping its an easier route to the Olympics.
thoughts?
Children, puhleeze. A 5k runner switching to the steeplechase is a difficult and uphill pathway..
This is true and also with Monson out due to injury, the 5k is similarly wide open, and not particularly hard to make as well.
Looking at 2023/2024 PBs no one is a slam dunk here. Presumably Ell St Purrier could add her name to this list at the top pretty easily if she chooses to do the 5k over the 1500.
Agreed. Maybe that list needs to have her and Mitchell acknowledged, but where in the list? Mitchell ran 9:24 last year, but just bettered her 1500m PB by 4 seconds, and if Val Constein is fully back, should be right up there contending for a spot.
Mitchell, Hyde, Val Constein and Ostrander are on the Trackfest steeple startlist (May 11.)

Kelati would likely be a lock for the 5000m team, should she run it, unless her speed falls off a cliff below 10000m.

Not sure why Cranny and Schweizer are not listed. They only two on this list I am confident about healthwise are Valby and Kelati. The other major contenders seem to be either injured, recovering, switching coaches (ie Cranny) , or running the steeple...

But not knowing much about her current 1500m fitness, Kelati would probably want a fastish 14:40 race, and she consequently would likely have to be pacesetter in order to get that.
Sorry but these times mean nothing in a strategic race. BTW Andrews time is 14:46 not 14:43. And she was a no show at Penn relays where she was marketes as the highlight 😂
and appears to be injured. Cranny, Kelati, Schweizer, Valby and Henes are the top to make the team in a strategic Trials race

Uhhh…ESP, Cranny, Schweizer and Henes (who is racing a 1500m today) in a strategic race.

And Andrews (assuming she isn’t injured) could perform in a strategic race, as well, but she might want it fast in order to take advantage of the athletes planning to double.

Things are a bit crazy when Valby is considered as among two "reliable health wise" contenders (it's all shaky in an Olympic year.)

All I said was that this is the list of 5k PBs from 2023/2024. I did NOT say this was the list of contenders. While Purier, Cranny, and Schweizer are solid, and are surely favorites to contend for a spot, they do not have a 5k PB below 15min in 2023 - 2024 seasons. I do think the 5k is more wide open than people think it is with Monson out. Its not like we have 14:20 types on this list anymore. The team could be all 14:4X types thats all I'm saying. People are acting like the 5k is a super tough team to make. Sure its a bit tougher than the steeple, but its not as tough as people are claiming. Its not as tough as the US 800, with many at 1:58 low or faster, (and with 30 at 2:00.X or faster!) or 1500 where there are many women under or at 4:00.X.

No thats wrong, Andrews ran 14:43 at the stanford Invite, Hilmer Lodge Stadium, Walnut, CA (USA) on 06 MAY 2023.
As I said its just the 2023 - 2024 PB list, thats it. I was simply stating facts. I'm not sure why people are taking it to mean it is my list of contenders or something. I never said such a thing.

Sorry but she sucks in races where strategy is involved. She’s all out or nothing. Her mental state is to blame. Not physical. Anyway doubt she’s up for it this season in general.

Always runs one good race per year. In 2023 she ran other 5Ks and couldn’t break 15! Inconsistency is her middle name

Yeah no one cares about one race over a year ago. She couldn’t repeat it that year and is missing since her indoor Boston race. Meanwhile at Oxy today Henes and Wayment ran 14:47 and 49 with qualifying standard times.

The Oxy race hasn't happened yet it is in an hour, those are their seed times (prs).

Cranny for sure does - she ran sub 15 3x last summer including 14:52 to win the trials. Schweizer ran 15:02 last summer while coming back.. I am bullish on her chances to get to solid sub 15 shape by the trials.
Also I kind of doubt Purrier will do the 5k because it is before the 1500m at the trials and that is her main event.
Agree 5k is pretty open right now compared to some other events. No one is solidly in sub 14:40's shape.
