He has cracked many eggs already… maybe it’s time for some self reflection on Lagat’s end. Seeing Shiu go from 2:05 to 2:15 under his coaching is concerning. Other than that one kid going from 1:54 to 1:50, there has been minimal improvement by his athletes. But even then, a junior running 1:50 is not impressive by any means. And not to mention, he has already cracked the existing team. Every year nearly half his team quits, gets cut for underperforming or transfers. If these aren’t “cracked eggs” then I don’t know what is. These eggs aren’t cracked, they’re fried.

The odds are negative. They dogged Andrew.. Did you see the article about how he and Gibson Kibia got cut? It was ugly.

I was in a similar boat. I was accepted to Arizona and was planning on coming here either way. When I approached Priscilla to discuss walking on, she told me that I wasn’t good enough by their standards and should consider going to community college instead if I wanted to run. I knew that I could eventually hit their standards, but after being treated that way, I said thanks but no thanks.

Don't worry about anything Priscilla says. Her and Lagat are the two most clueless coaches out there. Lagat cheated his way to medals and Priscilla was a terrible HS coach. I couldn’t think of a worse combo for coaching

This could relate to being able to handle massive training loads that their athletes can't handle, or conversely it could be that they were able to respond so robustly to training (sub 3:27 1500m on 60 mph).
Despite being coached for years by Coach Li, Lagat seems to not have mastered the craft of coaching.
As an aside, I think it's totally fair game for the University of Arizona triathlon ladies racing in cross country. Very similar to a football athletes doing sprints and jumps in spring track.. just a multisport athlete.

this makes sense. But with football, in that case, the track coaches are coaching them for jumps. Of course, natural talent is natural talent, but for these triathletes, they just race as part of their tri training. Impressive on their part for sure though.

Lol. This thread is crazy. I did some digging though and from what I have heard, the team was devastated when Ryan left. He advocated for the athletes. I assume that is gone with Priscilla.
What I can't understand is how he can possibly fail. He is charismatic and so should be a good recruiter. He knows the sport and loves it. He is relatable. He has all the workouts he did for decades. Maybe he does not know how to adapt them to the not very high level recruits that he gets? Explain this to me.

I think he meant that for the AD to crack some eggs and make a nice XC Sammy with Sean Brosnan as the new dish
theres certainly something weird going on with this program. Homegrown juco athlete Joel Gardner from Pima community college ran a 14:12 in san diego, and when he reached out hoping to get a spot on the roster next year they scoffed and said he MAYBE could walk on. This kid got 3rd in their opening home meet (2023) and beat all of their 5k runners including a sanchez twin. Idk if its lagats ego or what but theres something wrong with that progam. Gardner ended up at Alabama.

Here’s in my mind the difference between Li/Lagat and Gjert/Jakob. Gjert or Jakob could reliably coach 9:10 high schoolers to sub 14. Now Gjert may have some temperament issues, but his training methods get results reliably.
It’s crazy that Lagat has a faster 1500m PR than Jakob off of 60 miles a week and without an insane 800m PR like Coe.

I can't either. He is a blast to be around. He was at the peak of his career for 20 YEARS. You would think he noticed a pattern in training during that time, not to mention he took over Arizona from HIS COACH, James Li. Surely, he had a log. I heard he takes no advice from Li, however. I think sometimes egos get high. Can't blame him..mine would be too if I was the running goat for that long. To me, these kids burn out. They race fast the first race and never make it to the end. That often means workouts are too fast. He is coaching them at fitness levels they are not even close to. I assume he can't comprehend slow paces because he never had to run them. He would have been the BEST assist. coach. Might have learned a thing or two first. His best move would be stepping down and saying he wants to spend time with his family, but will be around to help.
