Surprised she’s committed to NC State as a true miler. Would’ve expected her to go to Oregon or Washington where she wouldn’t already be the fastest in her specialty. Barnett/Kazmierska/Elmore/Ayyildiz/Frias are operating at an incredible level

Me too. Maybe she feels she is more of a long distance, strength based runner?
Napolean has not improved on her 800m PR as a prep, will be curious if she can outdoors. She came in with a 2:03 pr and never ran below 2:06 this season. I said this before (and got downvoted) but it doesn't seem like Henes is particularly successful at coaching milers, and NC state isn't great with 400m /800m either. Only really 3k up and XC.
Why is it surprising? NCSt is a top program, This sport is tough because injuries are so common, but Henes has done a very good job with other top high school runners, has a great core of young runners coming in or already there, and the team has very good camaraderie. Some of these other programs have also lost some of their luster.
I'll explain. They are not getting paid. All these New Balance NIL deals consist of is shoes, some running apparel and travel to the Indoor and or Outdoor New Balance HS national meets only.
New Balance does this and has been doing this for years for the top kids in the country anyway without signing a "NIL". Why sign a contract that obligates you to attend their New Balance National Meet? It's now forcing these top kids to attend the New balance meet. HS kids think it's cool to post in IG they are getting a NIL deal when in reality if they didn't sign that deal they would get the same exact thing with no contract telling them what to chose.
What's the negative about committing to the New Balance meet? That's the only downside you are mentioning.
Plenty of athletes attend new balance meet with no deal, and choosing New Balance meet has no impact on college choice, or future results.
Sounds like a no brainer to me. Get me some gear and cover my travel costs please. Our friends at Nike have the similar Nike Elite program.
But you can do that with every program, point to athletes that temporarily regress or take time to adjust or never adjust due to injury. College progression on the women's side tends to be nonlinear.

I agree, I think the list is long of those who do not immediately improve while adapting to being away at college, attending college, and changes in training. Freshman year is too soon to judge.
Perhaps yes, but both schools have two girls in the mile for indoor nationals this year. Also, It is a lot easier to have more depth when you get three transfers in all in the same year which was this past fall for Oregon.
Terrible decision for a miler. NC State's recent history explains why. This is as bad a decision as Wiley (1:57/3:59) going to Colorado where they have never produced a single sub-2:00 and only one under 4:06.
Mia Barnett has already run a 2:04 800 this year and is adapting to Oregon training. Don’t be surprised outdoor if she has a banner outdoor season. She has incredible foot speed and is working on a possible move to the 800.

I've long been a fan of Barnett and her aggressive front running. Many of the ladies owe Mia for rabbiting their prs.
She's never had much speed though, which is why she's a front runner. I would be pleasantly surprised to see it magically appear.

If you want the best Mile program TODAY (perhaps not when Engelhardt joins in 2025), it would be the following programs -
Oregon, Washington, Providence, Virginia, BYU, Oklahoma State, Penn State

I agree with your overall point in terms of NC State and mid distance training, but Napoleon did set a new indoors 800 PB this year. Per Milesplit she never broke 2:10 indoors in high school
This is terrible news, Laurie Henes poor coaching abilities will ruin her :(
She's such a bad coach that she has 3 straight national championships.
Exactly... and by the way, that's the 5th top prospect that has had UVA on recruiting list and not attended. Every time Vin Lannana is mentioned as reason not signed. He's done so many athletes dirty over the years, his reputation is hurting him now no matter how good he can coach the creme of the crop.
She is a great recruiter. She isn't great with the technical aspect of coaching but recruiting and motivation comboned account for more success than the actual XO of coaching.
